Kansas City used strong pitching on Friday and Sunday to earn a pair of wins
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Softball (14-22, 5-7 Summit) took a pair of wins over North Dakota (23-16, 1-5 Summit) this weekend to claim its second-straight series win in Summit League play. The Roos gritted out a 5-3 win to open the series on Friday evening before falling in a run rule decision on Saturday. The series-deciding game was played through the rain, with Kansas City earning the 3-0 victory in a weather-shortened decision.
The Roos started strong on Friday, putting up three runs in the bottom of the second inning behind a two-RBI triple from Lauren Parker, her third triple in as many games. Elleana Navarro later singled Parker in to extend the Kansas City lead. The Fighting Hawks pulled a run back in the top of the fourth inning, but KC loaded up the bases in the bottom of the inning and added two more on RBIs from Monica Franklin and Mia Corres. North Dakota scored two more runs in the top of the fifth, but Alyssa Droge came on in relief of Delilah Robles and shut the door across the final 2.2 innings for her third save of the year.
The Fighting Hawks were dominant in the second game of the series, putting up five runs in the fifth inning and adding two more in the sixth to secure a run-rule victory. The Roos tallied just three hits in the game, two of which came from Franklin.
The series decision came down to a rainy game this morning, one in which Kansas City took advantage of a pair of early UND errors to jump out to the lead. The Roos scored a pair of runs in the first inning, scoring Ella Husak and Megan Johnston after two errors and a wild pitch. Corres opened the second inning with a walk, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Leilani Bustamante and scoring on a bunt single from Parker. That would be the end of the scoring for the Roos, but it was all the run support that Robles needed, pitching six innings of two-hit ball before the game was ended early due to field conditions.
Robles picked up a pair of wins in the circle, improving to 10-10 on the year. Her complete game shutout on Sunday was her second such start of the year, bringing her ERA down to 3.28 on the season.Â
Kansas City got production out of the catcher position this weekend, led by Franklin's four hits in seven at bats. Mary Cunningham played behind the plate in the series finale, going 1-of-2 with an RBI and a double. Parker and Navarro each batted .500, Parker going 3-of-6 with three RBI and a run scored, Navarro going 4-of-8 with one RBI.
The Roos have a mid-week doubleheader against SIUE on Wednesday before returning to Summit League play.
