Kansas City brought the heat in the men's short sprints, winning gold medals in the 60 & 200-meter dashes
GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Kansas City Track & Field took sixth place on both the men's and women's side at the 2026 Summit League Indoor Championships. For the men, Kansas City scored 44 points, finishing ahead of North Dakota and just behind Oral Roberts. The women netted 19 points as a unit, finishing ahead of Omaha and Oral Roberts. Highlights for the Roos included gold medals in the men's 60 and 200-meter dashes to go along with a silver medal in the 4x400-meter relay race and a bronze medal in the women's 400-meter dash.Â
Tory Lanham stole the show once again, matching his magic from a season ago by taking first in the 200m final with a time of 21.13 seconds. Lanham is now a back-to-back 200m indoor champion and a four-time Summit League champ in the 200m for both indoor and outdoor. Lanham is also the fourth Roo to become a two-time single event champion in KC's program history within the Summit League and the first since Anthony Boyer in the 60m hurdles in 2008 & 2010. The 2025 NCAA All-American also ran a career-best in the 60-meter dash, going 6.73 seconds in the final round to snag silver to help the Roos grab the top two spots at the conference meet.
As if that weren't enough, the Roos needed Lanham's heroics once again as the sophomore sprinter sprinted the back leg of the 4x400-meter relay, vaulting Kansas City from fourth when he received the baton up to a photo-finish in the closing moments of an epic last leg. The Roos finished the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:14.24, finishing one hundredth of a second shy of NDSU's first place time of 3:14.23 and claiming the silver in the 4x400m relay for the second straight indoor conference championship meet. Along with Lanham –– Najee Simpson, Arvesta Schine and Isaac Kane will claim All-League status thanks to the excellent team performance.Â
The only runner to dash a faster time in the 60m was Stephen Clunis. The Kingston Jamaica native recovered from a jittery start, blowing past his adversaries with blazing speed to clock a 6.69 second time, winning the gold medal for the Roos first 60m crown in program history within the Summit League. For Clunis, it's the finishing touches of a great comeback story as the senior sprinter was unable to compete in the 2025 Summit Indoor Championships due to injury, despite having the fastest time in the conference. Clunis proved his sprinting prowess on the biggest stage in the conference, earning his first collegiate medal in Grand Forks this weekend.Â
Jacky Perez-Vela made history on Saturday, running a time of 54.92 seconds to claim the bronze medal in the women's 400-meter dash final. Perez-Vela is the new Kansas City program record holder for the indoor 400m, also setting a new personal best in the process. Perez-Vela came into the meet ranked within the top 10 for the women;s 400m in the Summit League but upper her game on the brightest stage, showing why the sophomore mid-sprints runner has one of the brightest futures in the conference in the years to come.Â
Naomi Eyanagho took fourth in the women's shot put, notching a mark of 14.11 meters to finish as the best non-podium competitor in the event. Brooke Williams was steady in the triple jump, netting a mark of 11.52 meters to finish in eighth place. Miguel Hernandez earned 10th in the men's long jump with a mark of 6.99 meters.Â
Kansas City closes the book on the 2026 indoor season and will start their authorship of the 2026 outdoor season on March 21 for the Jayhawk Spring Fling.Â
