Kansas City posted its first shutout of the season in the 0-0 draw
KANSAS CITY - In true midwestern fashion, Kansas City Men's Soccer (2-1-3) and Drake (3-0-3) fought tooth-and-nail for 90 minutes this evening, a game that featured scrappy, end-to-end soccer. The final score did not match the excitement on the pitch and in the end both sides were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw.
HIGHLIGHTS
Brandon McGaugh made his first start of the season in goal, and was called into action early as Drake were the first aggressors. The Bulldogs attempted five shots in the first 25 minutes of play, including a header in the 16th minute that forced McGaugh to leave his feet, making a diving stop to keep the game scoreless.Â
From the 25th minute on, Kansas City began to establish itself more on the offensive end. Jeremy Francou took his first of three shots on the night in the 29th, an effort that was blocked away by Drake's back line.
The Roos' most threatening attempt of the night came in the 37th minute, when Miguel Fernandez switched the field and found Shotaro Kodama streaking up the left side. Kodama maneuvered around a defender and let a strike fly from just outside of the box, forcing Drake's Tomas Butkovic to make a leaping save and divert the shot just over the crossbar.
The second half began in a similar fashion with the Bulldogs attempting three shots in the first 10 minutes. McGaugh made his fourth and final save of the night in the 55th minute and from there it was Kansas City who had the quality chances.
The game came to a head in the final 20 minutes as the Roos sought the game-winning goal. Elie Kisoka made his entrance in the 70th minute and made an immediate difference, taking a shot that nearly found its way into the back of the net.
Kansas City remained the aggressor through the game's final 10 minutes, attempting three shots and forcing Butkovic to make two more saves. However, KC was unable to find the net and as the final horn sounded the Roos were left to split the points in their third draw of the young season.
COACH PORE POSTGAME
The game marks the first clean sheet of the season for Kansas City and the sixth of Brandon McGaugh's career. Bryson Gosch and Joackim Betina each played the full 90 minutes in Kansas City's back line to aid in the shutout efforts.
The Roos turn around for their third game in eight days on Saturday, traveling to San Diego for a meeting with the Toreros.
