Bryson Gosch scored the equalizer a minute after USD's goal to help KC salvage a point on the road
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Kansas City Men's Soccer (2-1-4) took on a nationally-ranked opponent for the fourth time on the young season this evening and came away with their third result in those games, drawing 1-1 with No. 25 San Diego (4-1-2) thanks to an equalizing goal from Bryson Gosch. The scoring happened in a flurry and the two evenly-matched sides were left to split the points in a battle of two 2024 NCAA Round of 16 teams.
Neither side gained sustained possession in the early-going, each team feeling the other out. San Diego was the first to find a stride on the offensive end, but came away with nothing to show for it. Kansas City responded around the 30-minute mark, piecing together its two best opportunities of the half back-to-back. Bryce Outman found Jeremy Francou between two defenders at the top of the box in the 33rd minute, giving him a prime opportunity. Francou let a shot fly, but San Diego's Lucca Adams reacted well to bat the ball away with his right hand. Just a minute later, the Roos gained steam in the attack as Emmanuele Garofalo slipped a ball to Kevin Nkumu on the right side of the six-yard box, but his attempt was off the mark.
The rest of the first half was controlled by the Toreros, peppering four shots at the Kansas City goal in the final 10 minutes. Marc Popow made his best effort of the night on an Ethan Warne shot in the 37th minute, moving all the way across the mouth of the goal to dive at Warne's header and keep the game level going into the half.
Coming out of the break, San Diego was dominant in possession and continuously applied pressure on the Roos' defense. The dam finally broke in the 72nd minute as Iain Wagner found a break in the defense and slipped through, heading away an Owen Walz cross for the opening goal.
It took no time at all for the Roos to come up with a response, needing just 74 seconds to equalize. Miguel Fernandez drew a foul on the edge of the attacking third, setting up a free kick from Bryce Outman. His entry ball was punched down by Adams, but it left the Toreros open for damage and Gosch took advantage. He approached and sent a left-footed effort in from 12 yards out, blasting it into the back of the net.
Gosch now has a pair of goals on the season, the first coming as the game-winner in KC's defeat of No. 24 Missouri State on Aug. 25. It is the third goal of his career on just six career shot attempts.
The game's final 15 minutes saw opportunities for both teams, but Kansas City seemed to be the ones in control. A pair of KCÂ corner kicks in the final minute of the game were unfruitful and it resulted in the Roos' fourth draw in seven contests.
Kansas City's busy schedule does not let up as the Roos are back in action on Wednesday, traveling to SIUE for a battle with the Cougars.
