KC used goals from Francou and Gosch to earn its third win over the Bears in two years
KANSAS CITY - Get hit, hit back harder. That has been the theme for Kansas City Men's Soccer (1-0-1) against Missouri State (1-1-0) over the past two years. The 18th-ranked Roos took down the No. 24 Bears in 2-1 fashion tonight to claim their third win against the in-state rival since Sep. 2 of last year, all three of which have come after Kansas City conceded the first goal.
It took just seven minutes for the Bears to make an early statement, scoring on their second shot of the day as Fumiya Shiraishi found Ollie Bate for his first goal of the season.
The Roos responded, and they responded quickly.
KC scored a pair of goals over the next seven minutes, first from Jeremy Francou. Gabriele Galluccio stepped into an MSU passing lane, intercepting and taking the ball to midfield. He sent a pass that found Francou in stride and allowed the Frenchman to do the rest, tucking a left-footed strike neatly into the lower-right corner.Â
The sophomore Galluccio now has three assists on the young season, tying his mark from his freshman campaign. Francou's goal was his first of the year, the fifth of his Kansas City career.
The Roos maintained a heavy attack following the equalizer, earning back-to-back corners in the 14th minute. Wade Muttitt took an out-swinger and found Francou, who poked the ball towards goal. Bryson Gosch was on the receiving end and had nothing left to do but strike it into the netting for the game-winner.
Gosch now has two career goals, the first of which was an equalizer against Denver in last year's Summit League Championship game.
From that point on, the Roos were relatively quiet on the offensive end, allowing the defense to hold on for the victory. It did not come without tests, as Marc Popow was called to action for three saves in the 68th minute or later.
The victory is Kansas City's fourth over a top-25 opponent in the past two years and the 11th in program history. Prior to the last two seasons, KC had never won more than three ranked games in a two-year span.
Kansas City is back in action at Durwood Soccer Stadium on Friday, hosting Saint Mary's College for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.Â
