KANSAS CITY, Mo. - No. 15 Kansas City Men's Soccer maintained its claim that it belongs in the discussions among the best teams in the land this evening, controlling the game from beginning to end and taking down UNLV, 1-0. Playing in front of 588 vuvuzela-blowing fans, the footballing Roos out-classed the Rebels, dominating possession at a 62% clip and doubling up UNLV on the shot chart.
The first 45 minutes were played to a scoreless draw, but not for a lack of trying by KC. The Roos fired off eight shots in the first frame and allowed just one attempt by the Rebels, keeping the bulk of play in the final third. Kansas City earned seven corner kicks, leading to prime opportunities for Mariano Beunza in the ninth minute and Ales Kohoutek in the 20th, but both were sent away by the UNLV keeper.Â
Kansas City maintained its attacking pressure in the early stages of the second half and were promptly rewarded with a 54th-minute game-winner from the foot of Shotaro Kodama. It was a moment of déjà vu for Roo fans as the play developed just like KC's game-winner over Lindenwood in the first round of last year's NCAA Tournament. It began with Mathias Baucher pushing the ball towards the right side, timing a perfect through pass to Kevin Nkumu along the end line. Nkumu sent the ball across the face of the goal and Kodama was there to meet it, burying his second-career goal.
The Rebels found a more consistent attack towards the end of the night, placing three shots on goal within the game's final 35 minutes. Brandon Kincaid was there to make the save on all three, securing his third-consecutive clean sheet. That brings his career clean sheet tally to eight, a tie for fourth-most in program history.
The Roos look to remain undefeated as they wrap up their season-opening home stand this weekend, hosting San Francisco on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.Â
