Kansas City Volleyball (3-22, 2-10) couldn't overcome a slow start against Oral Roberts (3-22, 1-12), falling in four sets (16-25, 20-25, 25-17, 20-25) at the Swinney Center Thursday night. The Roos struggled to put together enough stretches of consistency, particularly early into the match. The Golden Eagles jumped on the Roos early, putting together a 12-5 run to open the first set and not looking back, taking the opening frame by a nine point margin.
Set two was decided by a thinner margin as Kansas City kept pace with Oral Roberts, tying the set at seven points apiece early on. A strong stretch by the Golden Eagles saw the Roos get behind by a few points and were unable to climb their way back into the set, falling behind 0-2 in the match.
Set three saw Kansas City jump ahead of Oral Roberts 6-0 behind three aces in a row from Mia Weaver, who finished with four service aces for the match. The Roos kept their foot on the gas pedal with Ledisi Kpea punishing the ORU frontline while KC stood tall on their own defensive side to pull set three in favor of the home team. Kansas City stayed ahead of Oral Roberts by several points the whole way through set three and took it by an eight point margin.
In set four, Kansas City failed to grab momentum and yielded the final frame 25-20 to drop the match 3-1. Kpea led the team on both ends, recording 14 kills on a .276 hitting percentage to go along with 3.5 blocks and 17.5 points in the contest. Alaina Larson nabbed 19 digs to lead the team and record her 14th match of double figure digs this season. Lyla Jones and Chloe Kaminski spread the ball out offensively, dishing out 16 and 12 assists respectively. The Roos were outscored 60-51 in points and 46-38 in kills while outpacing the Golden Eagles in digs at 67-54 and assists 46-35 for the match.
Next up, Kansas City travels to Vermillion, S.D. to take on South Dakota at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning.
