Jeremy Francou scored the game's lone goal in the 25th minute of the win
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Men's Soccer (5-2-4, 1-1-0) has leaned on its defense all throughout this season, boasting the 46th-best goals against average in the NCAA. Tonight's game against Omaha (2-6-2, 1-1-0) was no different. The Roos made life hard on the Mavericks, controlling possession and smothering any Omaha chances on the way to a 1-0 victory. Jeremy Francou's 25th minute tally was more than enough for KC, limiting Omaha to nine total shots on the evening.
The Roos set the tone early, controlling over 60% of the possession in the first half. Elie Kisoka was all over the box, attempting five first half shots, one of which was on goal and another which banged off the woodwork. KC did well in getting to the end line and forcing the Mavs into difficult positions, earning nine corner kick opportunities in the first frame.
The vital moment struck midway through the half when Miguel Fernandez won a ball out of the air and sent it to midfield. Bryce Outman muscled the ball past an Omaha defender, leaving a sea of green in front of him and the back line. He pushed forward and into the attacking third, timing a perfect through pass to a streaking Francou, who had snuck behind the defense and was left with only the goalkeeper to beat. Francou pulled the keeper out of goal and did what he does so well, sneaking the ball right into the lower-right corner for the eventual game-winner.
Kansas City had other scoring opportunities to end the first half, but clung to the 1-0 lead heading into the break. Following the intermission, KC seemed perfectly content relying on its defensive prowess to seal the game. Marc Popow made three total saves on the night, but the defense made it so that none of Omaha's chances were particularly threatening. Guille Munoz and Wesley Cribb each played the full 90 minutes in the back line with Bryson Gosch and Kenny Yedmel combining to hold down the left back position.
Francou's goal was his sixth of the year, moving him into a tie for second in the Summit League and top 25 in the nation in that category. He has put himself in contention to earn a spot in the program's single-season top-10, just three goals away with six regular season games left to play.
Kansas City returns to action next weekend, traveling to Oral Roberts for a battle with the Golden Eagles at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
