Four double figure scorers and a four point halftime lead not enough to overcome late Fighting Hawks run
GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Despite holding a steady lead for the majority of the contest, Kansas City (10-10, 2-3) fell to North Dakota (8-13, 2-4) by a final of 76-72 on Saturday afternoon. With the Roos up a point, 64-63 at the 3:10 mark of the second half, the Fighting Hawks went on a 13-8 run to snag the narrow victory. The Roos shot 42% from the floor to North Dakota's 46% and 34% from three point range to the Hawks' 28% from downtown.Â
Cameron Faas led the Roos in scoring, pouring in 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor to go along with four three-point hits and a pair of steals. Jayson Petty recorded 17 points, six rebounds and went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Jamar Brown and Anderson Kopp registered double figures, scoring 11 and 12 points respectively.Â
KEY MOMENTSÂ
- 1H - 15:42 / 9-9 | Faas scored seven of Kansas City's nine points of the contest, scoring his third basket of the run off a cut to the basket and layup over two North Dakota defenders.Â
- 1H - 6:11 / 24-24 | Following a Kopp missed three pointer, Petty skied up for the offensive rebound, evading multiple defenders in the paint and went back up with the ball for the second chance putback layup.Â
- 1H - 0:30 / 34-32 | After the Hawks took a slight advantage late in the first half, Kopp took the give and go pass from Melvyn Ebonkoli and fired up a three from the left wing which switched through the net to give the Roos a narrow lead which they carried into the halftime break. Â
- 2H - 19:37 / 39-32 | Not even one minute into the second half and Faas picked up right where he left off, leaping up high to get a finger on a Hawks transition outlet pass and nab a steal. Faas then proceeded to pull up from 27-feet out and drain a long range triple to give the senior forward his second three of the game.Â
- 2H - 10:30 / 50-48 | In a back and forth second half, Davontae Hall took out his do-it-yourself kit and skated around his defender to float in a right handed runner from the left side of the foul line.Â
- 2H - 3:12 / 64-63 | After the Hawks took a late lead, Kopp responded for the Roos by nailing a catch-and-shoot trey from the left wing, putting Kansas City back in the lead with just over three minutes to go.Â
- Faas scored a team high 20 points which surpassed his career best mark in points of 18 which the senior had hit three times before. Faas had his fifth game of the season totaling four or more three pointers in a single game.Â
- Petty had his sixth straight game of double figure scoring, putting up 17 points for Kansas City. It's also Petty's seventh game this season of going perfect from the free throw line as he notched a 6-6 mark at the line on Saturday.Â
- Kopp had his game back from injury as the Houston, Tex. native put up a dozen points, his first double digit scoring outing since December 4 against Idaho.Â
