Maddie Sibbing’s five save performance was not enough to propel the Roos over the Bison
Kansas City – Kansas City Women's Soccer (6-3-3, 0-2-0) fought hard and scrapped but ultimately fell to North Dakota State (5-4-2, 1-0-1) by a score of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Durwood Soccer Stadium. The Roos put together another strong defensive performance and went blow for blow with the Bison, going into halftime tied. An early second half goal by North Dakota State was enough to sink the Roos chances at victory.
KEY MOMENTS
- 35 / 0-0 | The Roos earned their first major opportunity midway through the first half. Adriana Benassi took the ball across the left side of the Roos attacking third and beat her defender to cross the ball to a waiting Brianna Castleberry in the middle of the box. Unfortunately, Bison goalkeeper Payton Mulberry met Castleberry making the stop to deflect the shot attempt and Benassi's rebound shot was wide left of the net.
- 50' / 0-0 | Kansas City stood strong as Kinsley Smith made an excellent slide tackle to poke the ball out of bounds and force a North Dakota State corner kick. The Bison's lone shot off the corner was saved by Maddie Sibbing. Off the counterattack opportunity, Benassi took another shot but hooked it to the right as the game remained tied.
- 55' / 0-1 | After over 50 minutes of scoreless soccer, North Dakota State notched the only goal of the contest thanks to the efforts of Hannah Arnold and the assist from Morgan Russmann.
- 73' / 0-1 | One of the Roos critical second half chances came from Emery Ruliffson, who launched a shot to the lower left side of the goal but it was saved by the Bison goalkeeper.
STATS TO NOTE
- Three Roos had multi-shot games, including Castleberry, Benassi and Ruliffson, who notched Kansa City's only shot on goal.
- Kansas City recorded their 11th game allowing one goal or less to an opponent this season. The Roos had a 10 game streak allowing one goal or less that was snapped in their previous conference game against Denver.
- Following a career-high eight saves against Denver, Sibbing registered her third consecutive game of three saves or more.
