The Roos had opportunities to claim the win late, but could not take advantage
KANSAS CITY - The chances were there for Kansas City Men's Basketball (7-11, 1-2 Summit) this evening against North Dakota State (8-9, 1-1 Summit) this evening, but late mishaps allowed the Bison to escape from the Swinney Center with a double overtime victory, 92-91. Cameron Faas had a three-point attempt with time winding down in the second overtime and a chance to win the game, but his shot bounced off the rim and time expired as the Roos tried to get another shot up.
Kansas City fell behind early, but used stifling defense and a potent offense in the second half to make things interesting. The Roos claimed their first lead of the game at the 9:12 mark of the second half, and the two teams battled from there. Kansas City had possessions at the end of regulation and both overtimes, but were unable to take advantage, going 0-of-3 from three-point range on those opportunities.
Jamar Brown led the way for the Roos offensively, scoring a team-high 18 points, but he was held to a season-low two rebounds. Generally an advantage for the Roos, Kansas City was out-rebounded by NDSU, 40-37. The Bison limited the Roos offensive rebounding opportunities, holding KC to just four second chance points.
Khristion Courseault scored 17 and Cameron Faas added 15 to round out Kansas City's double-digit scorers, with Allen David Mukeba Jr. pitching in nine of his own. Faas and Jayson Petty each pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
KEY MOMENTS | HIGHLIGHTS
- 1H - 13:17 / 12-14 | Courseault drove the lane and found Yulian Ramirez-Montero open for a three-pointer in the corner, bringing the Roos within two points after trailing by 10 early. North Dakota State responded with an 8-2 run to keep some distance between them.
- 1H - 6:05 / 21-30 | The Roos were held without a field goal for over two minutes, but the drought was ended by a step-back from Babacar Diallo, his first points of the night. It brought KC back within single digits and sparked a 10-2 run for the Roos.
- 1H - 3:12 / 31-32 | Diallo forced a turnover, hustling to the other end to grab the loose ball. He found Faas trailing, who finished through contact for an and-one. Ramirez-Montero knocked down a triple on the next possession and brought the Roos within a point, but NDSU would score the final four points of the half.
- 2H - 16:43 / 39-39 | Faas took a pass, pump faked to lose his defender, and pulled up for his first three-pointer of the game, tying things early in the second half. However, NDSU would score the next six points to open a lead back up.
- 2H - 9:12 / 52-50 | A well-designed play created an easy pass from Petty to Brown, who hit a running floater and gave Kansas City its first lead of the game.
- 2H - 5:47 / 62-59 | Brown got a hand in the passing lane and created a turnover, getting the ball out to Courseault. Courseault then hurried up the court and found a trailing Faas for a deep three, putting the Roos back in front.
- 2H - 1:48 / 70-66 | Mukeba got a bucket to go through a foul, putting Kansas City up by four. He could not convert on the free throw, and the Bison ended regulation on a 7-3 run to force OT.
- OT - 0:51 / 79-77 | Following a pair of made free throws by Courseault, Diallo forced a steal, stripping the ball from NDSU's Boden Skunberg. Diallo grabbed the ball with nobody between him and the basket, finishing in the fast break to take a lead. NDSU would score on the next trip down the court, forcing a second extra session.
- 2OT - 3:25 / 82-85 | The Bison opened the second OT with back-to-back threes from Noah Feddersen, but Brown answered the call with a three of his own, his first bucket since the 9:12 mark of the second half.
- 2OT - 0:12 / 91-92 | Needing a bucket down by four points late, Courseault called his own name, driving to the rim and finishing through contact for an and-one. He knocked down the free throw, bringing KC within a point. NDSU's Jacari White missed a pair of free throws with eight seconds left, giving the Roos life, but Faas' last-second heave was wide and the Bison escaped with victory.
