Kansas City Comes Up Short in Battle against St. Thomas

The Roos and Tommies traded runs, but a grand slam sealed the deal for St. Thomas
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City (9 – 42, 4 – 17) dropped the series against St. Thomas (18 - 35, 6 - 14) in a 6-11 game three offensive battle. Kansas City was the first to make it on the scoreboard, but St. Thomas responded quickly. Putting up two runs in the bottom of the first. The Tommies added another two in the bottom of the second, and the Roos were able to chip away with bringing the score within one. Kansas City used five pitchers compared to the Tommies' two. A grand slam from St. Thomas in the bottom of the fifth put a comeback out of reach for Kansas City.

Depending on the outcome of the Western Illinois North Dakota game the Roos have a chance to advance to the Summit League Conference tournament held May 10 -13 in Brookings, S.D.

- Top 1 / 1-0| Ally Vonfeldt was walked, and Katie Noble reached first on an error, pushing Vonfeldt into scoring position. A single from Amelia Fitzgerald gave Kansas City its first run of the day. The Tommies responded in the bottom of the inning adding on two runs. St. Thomas then hit back-to-back home runs in the second them to four.
- Top 3 / 4-4| Fitzgerald sent one out to left field, earning a three RBI double. Sydney Nichols, Katherine Karnatz and Kiki McCrea all crossed home plate.
- Bottom 3 / 4-4| Noble went three up, three down to close the inning. The Tommies hit another home run in the third, forcing a Kansas City pitching change and then nailed their fourth home run of the day.
- Top 5 / 6-7| A double from Nichols brought in another run for the Roos. Both pinch hitters Gaby LaFavor and Elleana Navarro earned singles, with Navarro's hit bringing in a run. The Tommies responded with their fifth home run, a grand slam in the bottom of the inning, bringing them to 11 runs.
- Navarro's hit in the top of the fifth was her first career hit and an RBI. This was Navarro's ninth appearance this season.
- Earning four RBIs on the day, Fitzgerald tied the season high. She earned an RBI from a single in the first and three RBIs off a double in the third. Fitzgerald leads the team at-bat in conference with a .313 avg.
- The double in the fifth from Nichols extended her hitting streak to five games, currently the longest hitting streak on the team.
- Each of Kansas City's five pitchers made an appearance in the game, averaging around an inning a piece.
