Kansas City dropped its second-straight game on the final possession, losing to Utah State
KANSAS CITY - For the second-straight game, Kansas City Women's Basketball (1-2) fell in heart-breaking fashion, dropping a 62-60 decision to Utah State (1-2) this evening. The game was a back-and-forth affair, with 11 ties and eight lead changes. However, the most important lead change came with under a second remaining as the Aggies secured the win.
Kansas City was led by Nariyah Simmons, scoring 14 points on 4-of-9 three-point shooting. Tamia Ugass came in as the only other Roo to reach double-digits, scoring 11 points and pulling down six rebounds. Zaire Harrell provided a spark off the bench for KC, scoring seven points and coming away with two steals.
KEY MOMENTS
- 1Q - 6:44 / 5-4 | Kansas City got off to a slow start offensively, committing four early turnovers but holding Utah State to just four points in that span. The Roos took their first lead of the night as Ifunanya Nwachukwu pulled down a rebound on the defensive end and found Lisa Thomas in transition, who dished a ball to Nariyah Simmons on the right wing for a three. That sparked a seven-point run that helped Kansas City establish the tone midway through the quarter.
- 1Q - 2:41 / 13-8 | Tamia Ugass pulled down an offensive board on a miss by Thomas, scoring the put-back to extend KC's lead to five. The Aggies ended the quarter on an 8-1 run to erase KC's advantage and enter the second with a two-point edge.
- 2Q - 7:59 / 17-18 | Utah State scored the first bucket of the second quarter, but Dominique Phillips got going on the next trip down the court, nailing a three on the assist by Thomas and bringing the Roos back within a point.
- 2Q - 2:09 / 26-26 | Tough defense by Kansas City forced a three-point miss by Utah State, with Thomas pulling down the rebound and working quickly in the fast break. She got ahead of the pack and took a defender on one-on-one, stopping in the lane and knocking down a floater to tie the score.
- 2Q - 0:15 / 33-30 | Zaire Harrell made her presence felt after checking in late in the half, forcing a pair of Aggie turnovers and scoring four-straight points to give the Roos a three-point lead entering the half.
- 3Q - 6:57 / 36-36 | The Aggies opened the second half on a six-point run to take the lead, holding KC to 0-of-4 shooting. Dayshawna Carter checked into the game and found Simmons in the corner for her third three of the game, putting her over the 10-point mark and knotting the score.
- 3Q - 0:21 / 44-48 | After Utah State went on a 12-2 run, claiming a double-digit lead, Kansas City responded by ending the quarter on a six-point run and drawing back within four points. Phillips hit a floater on an in-bounds play, followed by four-straight points from Thomas to end the third.
- 4Q - 4:11 / 52-55 | Tamia Ugass scored four points in-a-row for the Roos, keeping them within striking distance midway through the fourth. Then, Harrell came down the court and converted on a three-point play, bringing Kansas City back within a possession. A Simmons three-pointer the next trip down tied the game up at 55.
- 4Q - 0:22 / 60-60 | A foul called on Utah State sent Phillips to the line with Kansas City trailing by a point. She missed the first free shot, but knocked down the second to knot the score. On the ensuing play by the Aggies, a drive to the basket resulted in the game-winning shot.
STATS TO NOTE
- Simmons' 14-point game was her second-straight game in double digits after scoring 15 in the game against UTEP on Saturday.
- Thomas dished a team-high five assists on the night, tying the Roos' individual season high for the young season.
- Kansas City pulled down more offensive rebounds (19) on the night than it did on the defensive end (18).
- For Harrell, her seven-point night was a career-high, besting her previous high of six against Grand Canyon on Dec. 3, 2022.
