Volleyball's Comeback Effort Falls Short Against North Dakota

For the second time in three days, the Roos battled back from two sets down, but fell in five
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For the third time in as many matches, Kansas City Volleyball went to five sets, falling to North Dakota 3-2 (25-18, 25-20, 26-28, 18-25, 15-10). Five Roos finished in double-digit digs, led by Kennedy Schritenthal with 19.
KEY MOMENTS
- S1 / 7-7 | Kansas City rattled off a 4-1 run, using two kills by Odyssey Warren, to tie things up early in the first set.
- S1 / 14-14 | A well-designed play to Georgia Mullins took the Fighting Hawks out of system, and Peyton Van Nest used the free ball to find Mullins again for a kill.
- S1 / 18-22 | Carly Gillen came around on a slide and tooled a ball off the block to draw the Roos within four, but UND took the next three points to win the set.
- S2 / 5-6 | Sydney Henry sent a set to the middle, where Kimora Whetstone came through with a fake, clearing the path for a Raina Smith tip to bring the Roos within a point early in the second.Â

- S2 / 11-13 | Schritenthal made a lunging dig to keep the point alive, and Rachel Sturdevant played a down ball off the block to bring KC within two, but the Fighting Hawks responded with a 5-1 run to create separation.
- S2 / 17-19 | The Roos strung together four-straight points, drawing with in two and forcing a North Dakota timeout.
- S2 / 20-24 | Kansas City got back-to-back kills from Warren to extend the second set, but a service error on the ensuing point gave the Fighting Hawks a two-set advantage.
- S3 / 6-3 | With Henry on setting duties, the Roos got four-straight kills to take an early lead in the third set.
- S3 / 12-6 | An excellent back-set delivery from Van Nest to Mullins went for a cross-court kill, extending the KC lead to six and forcing a North Dakota timeout.

- S3 / 20-16 | After North Dakota drew back within two, a kill by Sturdevant and an ace by Van Nest put the Roos back ahead by four points.
- S3 / 28-26 | Sturdevant came out of the right side to battle off a UND match point, and Smith sent across two-straight kills to clinch the third set in favor of Kansas City.
- S4 / 6-5 | Warren kept the Roos alive with a sideways swing and got right back into action, teaming up with Gillen for a block that put the Roos ahead by a point.
- S4 / 12-12 | The Roos got back-to-back points, including an ace by Leah Green, to tie things up in the fourth.
- S4 / 19-16 | Schritenthal joined Henry, Whetstone and Green to become the fourth Roo with an ace in the fourth set, forcing a UND timeout.Â

- S4 / 25-18 | Van Nest found Smith and Warren for kills and Kansas City ended the fourth set with three-straight points to force a fifth.
- S5 / 8-7 | Kansas City had a slight advantage at the change-over after winning three-straight points, including kills from Warren and Smith. The Fighting Hawks would take six of the next seven points to gain control and win the match.
STATS TO NOTE
- The Roos out-dug the Fighting Hawks, notching 84 on the day. Schritenthal notched 19 for her third-straight match with 15-plus, while Green had 15, Warren and Henry had 14 each and Van Nest finished with 10.
- Warren led the Roos with 17 kills, her third match in-a-row in double-digits.
- Kansas City won the battle in the block, 9-7, their first time out-blocking an opponent in six matches.
- Mullins finished with a season-high 13 kills, notching five in the third set alone.
- KC sent across seven aces on the day, five of which came in the fourth set. The Roos have notched at least six aces in five of their last six contests.
UP NEXT
The Roos take to the road for a pair of contests next week, playing Omaha on Thursday and Denver on Saturday. KC fell in sweeps to both teams in the first time through conference play.
