Cranes' season will run May through July, composed of local talent
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City Women's Soccer Head Coach Jess Smith continues to show her passion for soccer, Kansas City, and growing the game while developing players at the next level. Yesterday, Smith was announced as the first-ever Head Coach and Technical Director for Kaw Valley FC in their inaugural season of the revamped USL W-League.
Kaw Valley FC was selected as a founding member of the USL W-League. The league is a pre-professional women's soccer league set to kick off play in May 2022. It will serve as the nation's premier pre-professional league developing the next generation of women's soccer talent both on-and-off the field as a pipeline between college and professional soccer.
"The USL W-League is another example of growth for women in our game," Smith said. "My goal for our team is to provide a great training and competition environment for college players who are residing in the community this summer so they can have successful fall campaigns for their respective colleges."
Smith's priorities lie with Kansas City Athletics as the Head Women's Soccer Coach while also helping local talent continue to develop in their athletic careers in her new role. The Kaw Valley Cranes' schedule will run from May through July. The schedule and location of home matches are expected to be announced in the coming months.
"I'm excited to coach Kaw Valley FC in the USL W-League. It is an opportunity for professional growth for me during the summer when NCAA rules don't currently allow us to coach our own student-athletes," Smith said. "The experience will help me prepare for our upcoming fall season and I am looking forward to putting together a highly competitive team."
