Jony Muñoz (56') and Seth Kacich (89') each scored to lead the Roos to a season sweep of Omaha
Jony Munoz also scored in the 56th minute, increasing his team-leading goal total to five.
With the win, Kansas City sweeps their season series against the Mavericks, giving them their only two losses on the season.
The win was a relief for the team and Coach Ryan Pore, who picked up his third-career victory, with two coming against Omaha. It took the Roos a while to get started, going into halftime down 1-0 after Omaha scored in the 32nd minute.
"Honestly, I didn't think we played well at all in the first half. I challenged the guys at halftime to figure it out and I couldn't be more happy with the performance they gave me and the program in the second half," said Pore. "We've been here before and haven't come out on the right side of the score. Tonight we did and it feels really good."
After trailing at the intermission, Kansas City came out firing with the offense crowding around the Omaha net and getting chances. At 56', that persistence paid off with Muñoz burying the tying score.
With Omaha trying to keep possession in their defensive third, Muñoz stepped into a passing lane, deflecting the ball to Dontell Gilyard. Gilyard quickly played it back to Muñoz, who buried the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.
When the Mavericks got a few chances of their own, Cooper Clark was there to keep the score even at one. Clark made seven saves on the day, keeping the Roos alive through the second half.
With regulation running down, the Roos drew a foul on the edge of their attacking third. Muñoz stepped up to take the free kick, playing it over to Ryan Khedoo near the right sideline. Khedoo send a cross into the box, finding the head of Kevin Komodi. Komodi put an attempt on goal, but it was blocked by the Mavericks' keeper right into the lap of Kacich. Kacich saw his opportunity to bury the game-winner with just over a minute left to play and seized it for his first-career goal.
Muñoz finished the day with five shot attempts, two of which were placed on frame. Komodi had five of his own, including the assist on Kacich's game-winner. Kacich came out of the defense for a career-high four shots, and Hugo Gutierrez Martínez was the only other Roo with a shot.
Kansas City (3-6-1) now goes on the road to play Creighton in Omaha on Monday, March 29. Kickoff is 2 pm.
