Softball: Roos Defeat Portland State and Fall to Hawai'i on Day Two

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – On day two of the Hawai'i Invitational, Kansas City softball (3-6) put together two solid games, but split the day going 1-1. In the first game of the day, the Roos defeated Portland State 3-2. In game two against the hosts, Hawai'i, the Roos lost 3-2 on a walk-off single.
Game No. One vs. Portland State
After falling in both games yesterday to start the Hawai'i Invitational, the Roos came out with some fire on day two. It was a well put together game on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball that led the Roos to a 3-2 win in their first ever matchup with Portland State.
The pitching staff was the difference in this game, as Mia Hoveland and Kailyn Packard combined for the one-two punch. Hoveland (1-2) earned her first win this season, going 4.1 innings and giving up two earned runs. Packard came in as a reliever and shut down any and all Viking comeback attempts in 2.2 innings of work only giving up two hits.
The Vikings had virtually no answer for the sophomore Hoveland in the circle to start the game and the Roos offense got off to a hot start. After Sydney Garcia reached on a hit by pitch, she stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Chyanne Onstad picked up her second RBI of the season with a SAC fly giving the Roos a 1-0 lead in the first.
In the top of the third inning, Onstad found the scoreboard again for the Roos, sending her second home run of the year over the left-center wall. With two outs, the other senior, Breanna Hunter came through in the clutch and sent an RBI single through the left side of the infield to give the Roos a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Vikings finally found the scoreboard, courtesy of a Morrison home run to left field that also scored the runner on first to bring the Vikings to within one run. After a few more hits for the Vikings in the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Kailyn Packard came in for the Roos.
In the final 2.1 innings, Packard shut down the Viking offense, holding them to no runs on just two hits.
Game No. Two vs. Hawai'i Recap
In game number two of the day, Kansas City matched up for the second time of the tournament with the hosts, Hawai'i. In the first game against Hawai'i, the Rainbow Warriors won by a final score of 5-1. In this game, the Roos played a lot better, but fell 3-2 on a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh.
It was again the brilliance of number eight in the pitching circle for the Roos. Packard threw a complete game, giving up just three runs (two ER). However, Kansas City's offensive push stalled after the second inning, allowing Hawai'i to walk away with the win. Packard moves to 2-3 on the season. The Roos matched the Rainbow Warriors hit total with five, but the errors for the KC side added up. The team committed four errors to Hawai'i's two, which ended up being the difference in the game.
In the first inning, both teams capitalized off of errors, scoring one a-piece. Junior Lia Lombardini had a standout performance this game, going 2-3. In the top of the second, she sent a solo shot over the wall for her first home run and RBI of the season.
It was a pitcher's duel the rest of the game, with both Packard and Hawai'i's Murphy trading '1...2...3' innings.
However, in the bottom of the seventh inning, Hawaii loaded the bases after an error and a couple base hits. Packard racked up two outs, but couldn't get the final one, allowing a single into left field.
The Rainbow Warriors move to 7-1 all-time against the Roos.
