GARCIA POISED FOR A BIG YEAR
- Last season as a junior, Sydney Garcia put together a solid season. This season, she is off to an even hotter start. She ranks third in the conference in batting average (.500) and is on a five game hitting streak since starting the season.
- Because of her efforts last weekend at the Maverick Classic, Garcia earned Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week. It marked her first WAC Hitter of the Week award in her collegiate career, surprisingly.Â
- It took a couple games for sophomores Kailyn Packard and Mia Hoveland to find their stride in the pitching circle to start the season last weekend, but now they are off and rolling.
- In the final game of the Maverick Classic, Packard and Hoveland held the preseason favorite in the Southland Conference Stephen F Austin to just two runs in the win. That marked the Ladyjacks lowest scoring game of the season.
- In the first five games of the season, it became clear that the freshman will have a large role with the Roos.
- Abby Sciara produced in a huge way for the Roos last weekend. She stared four out of the five games, batting .333. In the last win over SFA, she drove in the first run of the game that set the tone for the remainder of the game.
- Katherine Karnatz started all five games for the Roos at SS. She was instrumental in helping the Roos to two wins because of her defense. In the first win over SFA, in the top of the sixth Karnatz gunned out the tying run at the plate.
- Center fielder Maggie Klover started four of the Roos five games in the leadoff spot. She earned three walks, tied for first on the team with Sydney Garcia and Delainey Fenoglio.
- Iowa comes into the Hawaii Invitational with the best record out of the four team (7-2). The Hawkeyes are led by pitcher Lauren Shaw, who is fresh off winning the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week. She owns a 5-1 record with a 1.65 ERA. This will be the Roos first ever match up with the Hawkeyes of the Big Ten.
- Hawai'i has competed in two tournaments so far this season, entering the weekend with a 4-7 record. While successful at the plate (.307 batting average as a team), the Rainbow Warriors have struggled in the circle. The team holds a 5.69 ERA. All time, the Roos are 1-5 against Hawai'i. Last time these teams macthed up, the Roos picked up a win in 2016.
- Portland State holds a 3-7 record coming into the weekend. In the box, Darian Lindsey leads the team in RBI's (8) and has hit two home runs. This will be the Roos and Vikings first ever matchup in its history.Â
