KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Despite a battle to the final buzzer, Kansas City Women's Basketball (1-1) could not overcome a hot-shooting Rockhurst (3-1) squad in an exhibition game on Sunday evening, falling 67-64. The Roos used a 12-0 fourth quarter run to make the game interesting, but a big Daly Sullivan three with just over a minute remaining secured the Hawks' victory.
Rockhurst jumped on the Roos from the tip, opening up a 17-8 lead in the first quarter. With 30 seconds remaining in the quarter, Emily Ivory drew a charge, then buried a triple to spark a 14-2 Kansas City run that spanned into the early parts of the second frame.
The Roos and Hawks battled for the remainder of the second quarter, resulting in a three-point deficit at the half. The Kansas City bench provided a spark, scoring 19 of the Roos' 30 points. RaVon Nero led the charge, finishing the half with 10 points on three field goals.
The third quarter was all Rockhurst. The Hawks outscored the Roos, 22-12, aided by 53-percent shooting. Kansas City had trouble getting shots to fall, connecting on just three field goals in the frame.
In the fourth, Kansas City began to show life. Sanaa' St. Andre provided energy for the Roos, scoring seven points and coming away with two steals. Taylor Larson gave the Roos the rebounding edge that they had been missing all day, pulling down six boards. She finished with a career-high-tying 10 rebounds.
After trading buckets to begin the quarter, Nero and St. Andre connected on back-to-back three pointers to cut the Hawks' lead to seven. Larson hit a lay-in, Naomie Alnatas connected on a free throw and Ivory knocked in a three, and all of the sudden the Roos were within a point.
Sullivan converted on one-of-two free throws to extend the lead to two, but a St. Andre layup in the paint tied the ballgame with just under two minutes remaining. Sullivan and Jonaie Johnson traded quick buckets, but Sullivan's three from the wing with 1:09 remaining gave the Hawks the lead for good.
Nero led the scoring attack for the Roos, finishing with 15 points. In her three games as a Roo, she has reached double-digits each time. St. Andre was not far behind, finishing with a career-high 13 points and four steals, and Ivory was the only other Roo to reach double-digits with 12 points.
Kansas City is back in action on Wednesday, as they take on another local opponent in William Jewell at 6 p.m. in the Swinney Center. Coverage of the game will be provided on the Roo Sports Network.
