KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City Women's Basketball (1-1, 0-0) team won its home opener by a score of 76-51 over Northwest Missouri State (1-1, 1-1). A surge following the first quarter was all the Roos needed to grab command of the game.
"Once we settled in, we started to convert our defense into offense," Head Coach Jacie Hoyt said.
Emily Ivory continued her hot start to the year with 11 points in the first half. The Roos doubled the Bearcats' rebounds and put up 14 second-chance points in the first half to pull away with a 35-22 lead at 20-minute mark. The battle on the boards was led by Kansas City's Paige Bradford, bringing down nine in the first half alone.
"Our emphasis the last few practices were to battle each other to become better rebounders," Hoyt said. "That showed up tonight as we dominated the boards, I was really proud of our players' response."
The spark in the second half continued as the Roos out-rebounded their opponent 49-to-26. The Roos' bench contributed 29 points on the night, led by RaVon Nero, who added 12 to the scoring column. Freshman Sanaa' St. Andre, also shone bright as she dropped nine points, seven rebounds and six assists.
"We are still trying to figure out who is going to bring what, with a lot of new faces in the program," Hoyt said. "Paige is someone who we are counting on to be a staple in what we do."
Bradford compiled her first double-double performance in her second game in a Kansas City uniform, knocking down 15 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Jonaie Johnson was the fourth player for the Roos to end in double-digits, scoring 10 points and bringing down seven rebounds.
The Roos return home Sunday against neighboring Rockhurst University on Dec. 6th at 4 p.m. Tune into the Roos Sports Network at kcroos.com or follow Kansas City Women's Basketball @KCRoos_WBB on Twitter for updates and highlights.
