KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City women's basketball (2-2) found themselves in the final round of the WNIT consolation bracket, after defeating Portland State last night. The Roos battled Davidson today, but couldn't overcome the hot hand of Davidson's Suzi-Rose Deegan, losing by a final score of 74-64. This marked the first time the program was invited to the WNIT preseason tournament, an invitation extended to top programs across the country. Kansas City was named a host for the consolation bracket, bringing exciting basketball to the city for the first time in program history.

The Roos were led by senior guard Ericka Mattingly and sophomore guard Emily Ivory, both with 34 points each in the tournament, earning them All-Tournament team honors.
Like all games this weekend, todays matchup between Kansas City and Davidson was a competitive battle. Ericka Mattingly led the Roos in points (21) and assists (4). Davidson's freshman guard Suzi-Rose Deegan stole the show, putting up a game-high and tournament high 31 points, with 13 of those coming in the fourth quarter. She was named tournament MVP, scoring 39 total points in the tournament.
The final three minutes of the game determined the winner today, with the score differential not reaching more than five points until the final three minutes in this tightly contested game. Â
Â
Davidson started the game with a quick three-pointer, but the Roos responded by going on an 8-0 run in the following five minutes of play behind four different Roos in the scoring column. The first quarter came to a close with Davidson on top 15-12.
Â
The second period was one of the best quarters competitively all tournament, with both teams scoring 20 points, giving Davidson a three point advantage at the half  35-32. Christina Soriano dominated in the paint, scoring half of the Roos points in the second quarter (10) all inside the paint. One of those buckets came off of a highlight reel pass courtesy of a between the legs, no look pass (what looked more like a long snap in football) from Ericka Mattingly.
Â
The game shifted to a defensive battle in the third quarter, with both teams scoring 12 points apiece and Kansas City still down by three, 47-44.Â
Â
In the final quarter, Kansas City cut it to one point with three minutes remaining off of an insane reverse layup from Jada Mickens. The difference in this game was the final three minutes, as the Wildcats outscored the Roos 14-5. Sophomore Emily Ivory added 17 points behind Mattingly's 21 for the Roos. The teams were pretty even in the stats categories, with Davidson taking a slight edge in shooting percentage 43 percent to the Roos 36 percent.Â
Kansas City will be back at the Swinney Center for a regular season non-conference matchup against Rockhurst. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. CT.
