Roos Officially Clinch Third Seed in Conference Tournament
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Kansas City volleyball team entered its regular season finale playing some of its best volleyball of the year, having won its last five matches. Great volleyball would be needed to compete with New Mexico State, who had already clinched the WAC regular season title with undefeated conference play. The Roos competed well, but did not quite have enough, as the Aggies were able to take the victory, 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23).Â
"NMSU has great offensive balance and they are physical at the net," Head Coach Christi Posey said. "We needed more production from more attackers to put more pressure on them."
Alicia Harrington and Melanie Brecka continued their tandem leadership of the Roos' offense, combining for 34 of Kansas City's 57 total kills. Harrington added 10 digs for her team-leading 11th double-double of the season.
Kansas City was able to battle with the Aggies at the net, after being out-blocked 9-4 when these teams met earlier in the year. Kansas City finished with five blocks to New Mexico State's seven, led by Mykal Sadler, who finished with a match-high four total blocks.Â
"Statistically, we were fairly even," Posey said. "They made more plays at the end game in the sets that they won."
In the end, the Roos had little answer for the Aggies balanced attack, as they finished with four players in double digit kills. Reigning WAC Offensive Player of the Week Julianna Salanoa finished with 11 kills on .409 hitting, while Megan Hart had 13 kills on .310 hitting.
The Roos officially clinch the third seed in the WAC tournament, waiting for the result of tomorrow's match between Seattle U and California Baptist to find out their opponent. If Seattle U wins on Sunday, the Redhawks will clinch the sixth seed, if they lose, CSU Bakersfield will clinch the final seed.
"We have been playing hard all season long," Posey said. "We're pretty locked in right now and we're looking forward to competing at the conference tournament."
