DES MOINES, Iowa -- Kansas City Men's Basketball (1-2) continued its road swing and lost at Missouri Valley Conference opponent Drake University (2-1) tonight by a 76-58 score. Senior Jordan Giles had a season-high 15 points on 7-of-15 shooting for the Roos. Senior Javan White hit for his second-straight double-digit game with 11 points and a career-best five steals. Junior Brandon McKissic chipped in with 10 points.
"We played really poorly the last eight minutes of the first half and certainly credit Drake, but that's where we lost the game," said head coach Billy Donlon. "Our resiliency will be tested on Friday with another good Milwaukee team."
Trailing by nine after a Maks Klanjscek three-point basket at the 10-minute mark remaining, Kansas City went flat offensively. The Roos had a chance down 61-52, but the host Bulldogs closed out the game on a 11-6 run. Liam Robbins had four of his game-high 23 points for Drake during the final stretch.
The first half looked promising for the Roos as the visitors had its largest lead, 27-23, at the 6:58 mark. McKissic splashed in one of his two 3-pointer's to give Kansas City the momentum. But, Kansas City turned the ball over four times and Drake capitalized by turning the deficit into a 45-36 halftime lead.
After halftime, Drake wouldn't let the Roos get back into it always holding at least an eight-point advantage until the end.
Kansas City couldn't find their rhythm shooting a cold 38.6 percent (22-of-57) overall. The Roos also couldn't control the glass getting out-rebounded by a 35-20 margin.
Statistically, Giles was the highlight as he added six rebounds and three assists to his scoring total. He played 34 minutes tonight, which is more than his last two games combined (21 minutes). Giles has seen success against the Bulldogs as he finished with 11 points, two blocks and three rebounds in last year's meeting.
Kansas City will travel from Iowa to Milwaukee, Wis., for a tilt Friday at 7 pm against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
