(Kansas City, Mo.) – UMKC women's basketball had its four game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday afternoon at the hands of No. 15 Northwestern, 80-38 at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill.
"Obviously the turnovers were a game changer for us tonight," Head Coach Marsha Frese said. "There were many that were within our control, but I'm proud of the job we did on the boards, beating a Big 10 team on the glass. This is a game that we can learn from and certainly doesn't negate what has been a tremendous month of hard work. We have an opportunity to finish up our non-conference strong and I know our team will take advantage of that chance."
Kristen Moore led the 'Roos with nine points, five rebounds and two assists, while Kiana Law finished with seven points and seven rebounds.
The loss drops Kansas City to 4-7 overall, while Northwestern improves to 11-1 on the season.
In the game, UMKC struck first when Aries Washington found Taylor Leathers for a jumper, but the Wildcats answered back with the next seven points to take the lead.
Two Law free throws kept the lead at five late in the first quarter, but Northwestern scored last to end the first quarter up 15-8.
Northwestern would extend the lead to a first half-high of 18, but a three from Sierra Bone and a three-point play by Leathers brought UMKC to within 12 with under a minute remaining in the half. The Wildcats, though, struck last, taking a 35-20 lead into the break.
Coming out of break, Northwestern broke the game open, outscoring the 'Roos 27-8 in the stanza, with Moore, Washington, Law and Paige Husa all scoring for Kansas City.
Northwestern would go on to extend the lead to 42 twice in the fourth quarter, including at the final buzzer when the Wildcats won 80-38.
Washington chipped in eight points and four rebounds and Leathers added seven points, four rebounds and two assists.
As a team, UMKC out-rebounded the Wildcats 39-35 and outscored them on second chance points 14 to eight.
