(Kansas City, Mo.) – UMKC women's basketball dropped its 2015 finale, 70-47 to Towson on Wednesday afternoon at SECU Arena in Towson, Md.
Aries Washington led the 'Roos offensive attack with nine points and six rebounds, while Sierra Bone finished with a career-high eight assists, two rebounds and a block. Off the bench, Kiana Law finished with eight points and seven rebounds and her frontcourt teammate Paige Husa added eight points and six rebounds off the bench, as UMKC outscored Towson 21-16 with its reserves.
“Sierra Bone was a great spark for us tonight and really did a phenomenal job of setting up her teammates,” UMKC Head Coach Marsha Frese said. “As a team, however, we need to take better care of the basketball and give ourselves more opportunities. We need to have a short memory of this one with a quick turnaround against Morgan State on Saturday.”
The loss drops UMKC to 4-8 overall, while the Tigers improve to 3-8.
Towson jumped out to an early 9-0 lead in the contest, but UMKC quickly cut the lead to five when Bone found Washington for a jumper and Washington found Kristen Moore for a jumper on back-to-back possessions. Law then followed with a jumper of her own to trim the deficit to 9-6 midway through the first quarter.
Towson would stretch the lead to seven, but Bone found Washington and Husa for layups to cut it to one before a Tiger free throw closed the quarter with the 'Roos trailing 18-14.
The 'Roos would keep the lead at five with just under six minutes remaining in the half, but Towson closed the second quarter on a 14-6 run to take a 39-25 lead into the break.
Coming out of halftime, Samantha Waldron buried a three off another assist from Bone, but 12 straight from the Tigers pushed the lead to 23 at the halfway point of the quarter.
UMKC cut the lead to 18, but the quarter would end with the Tigers holding a 59-37 advantage.
In the fourth, Kansas City chipped the lead down to 61-44 after two free throws by Law and one by Moore, but UMKC could get no closer as Towson came away with the 70-47 victory.
The 'Roos starting frontcourt got five points and six rebounds from Moore and six points and three rebounds from Taylor Leathers.
As a team, UMKC out-rebounded Towson 43-39 and limited the Tigers to just 16.7 percent shooting from three-point range.
The Blue & Gold will continue their two game swing through Maryland when they open 2016 on Jan. 2 against Morgan State at 1 p.m
