Cissell vs. Opponent: 1-0
The Games
The 'Roos and Broncs met for the first time last weekend and it was a memorable introduction for UMKC as Emily Herndon & Co. hammered UTPA with six goals by a school record five different players to win by the largest margin in school history. The rematch between the Kangaroos and Aggies was equally fruitful for the hosts, and UMKC won for the second time in three meetings, knocking off NMSU 4-2 behind a breakout performance by freshman Whitney Lucas.
The Coaches
Entering his fourth year at the helm, UMKC head coach Chris Cissell is looking to build on the most successful season in program history in 2013. Under Cissell's leadership, the 'Roos set program marks for virtually every win-related category, including overall wins (12) and conference victories (eight), en route to the team's first appearance in the conference title game.
Cissell has compiled a record of 33-30-11– marked success for a program that won just two games in two seasons prior to his arrival.
Freddy Delgado was named the third head coach in program history in January 2014. Delgado served as the interim head coach following the resignation of Blair Quinn in November of 2013.
Delgado joined the New Mexico State soccer staff as an assistant coach in March 2013. He has 17 years of experience coaching in the collegiate ranks including five seasons as a Division I head coach at UALR.
Glad Bugariu was hired as the first women's soccer head coach in program history on April 26, 2013.
Before coming to the University of Texas-Pan American, he spent five seasons as the head coach at South Carolina State University, where he is the winningest coach in the program history.
The Series
The 'Roos lead NMSU by a game after taking the third meeting between the teams. UMKC and UTPA played for the first time last weekend.
Scouting the Competition
New Mexico State has struggled mightily out of the gates in 2014. A group picked to finish sixth in an expanded WAC is 2-11 and losers of seven of their last eight. The Aggies knocked off Incarnate Word on Aug. 31 for their lone victory of the season thus far. Common opponent, Creighton, knocked off NMSU 6-0 in Omaha, Neb., during the third week of the season.
Meanwhile, UTPA, picked seventh in the league and considered by many to be several years away from competing for a tournament berth, has been one of the surprise teams of the season to this point, jumping out to a 7-2-4 start with an unbeaten mark at home.
