The Games
The 'Roos will welcome a pair of WAC foes to Durwood Stadium this weekend as they look to stay hot off of what will be the team's longest lay-off of the season, a two-week gap prolonged by a flight cancellation last weekend. UMKC is 3-1-1 over its last five games, including a shutout of then-undefeated Creighton; the lone blemish, a 1-0 loss at No. 15 Kansas.
The Coaches
Entering his fourth year at the helm, UMKC head coach Chris Cissell is looking to build on the most successful season in program history in 2013. Under Cissell's leadership, the 'Roos set program marks for virtually every win-related category, including overall wins (12) and conference victories (eight), en route to the team's first appearance in the conference title game.
Cissell has compiled a record of 31-30-11– marked success for a program that won just two games in two seasons prior to his arrival.
Freddy Delgado was named the third head coach in program history in January 2014. Delgado served as the interim head coach following the resignation of Blair Quinn in November of 2013.
Delgado joined the New Mexico State soccer staff as an assistant coach in March 2013. He has 17 years of experience coaching in the collegiate ranks including five seasons as a Division I head coach at UALR.
Glad Bugariu was hired as the first women's soccer head coach in program history on April 26, 2013.
Before coming to the University of Texas-Pan American, he spent five seasons as the head coach at South Carolina State University, where he is the winningest coach in the program history.
The Series
The 'Roos and Broncs have never met. UMKC and New Mexico State played for the first time in the programs' history last season, splitting a pair in a back-to-back. The 'Roos picked up their first WAC victory against the Aggies last season, routing NMSU 3-0 behind goals by Emily Herndon, Alyssa Elver, and Taylor Bare.
Scouting the Competition
New Mexico State has struggled mightily out of the gates in 2014. A group picked to finish sixth in an expanded WAC is 1-10 and losers of six straight. The Aggies knocked off Incarnate Word on Aug. 31 for their lone victory of the season thus far. Common opponent, Creighton, knocked off NMSU 6-0 in Omaha, Neb., during the third week of the season.
The Aggies have been outscored 41-10, half of those goals coming off the foot of Jennae Cambra, with four assists from Preseason All-WAC selection Layla Todd.
Meanwhile, UTPA, picked seventh in the league and considered by many to be several years away from competing for a tournament berth, has been one of the surprise teams of the season to this point, jumping out to a 7-1-3 start with unbeaten marks both at home and on the road.
The Broncs have been led offensively by Andreya Barrera and Aimie Inthoulay. Barrera, a freshman from El Paso, Texas, leads the team with seven goals, while fellow-freshman and Burien, Wash., native, Inthoulay, has scored four goals of her own and assisted on four more.
