(Kansas City, Mo.) -- Ellie and Hannah Chadick each scored goals to lead UMKC to its sixth straight win, a 2-0 victory over Grand Canyon at Durwood Stadium on Friday night.
The 'Roos (9-3-2, 5-0-0) commanded possession throughout the match, and particularly in the early going, outshooting the 'Lopes 12-1 in the first half. Canyon hung around, however, thanks, in large part, to the effort and activity of goalkeeper Blakely Fraasch.
The second half pace was much the same, with UMKC in control but unable to break through despite numerous near-misses. That changed in the 71st minute when Ellie Chadick put the Kangaroos on the board with her second goal of the season. Chadick's initial attempt was stopped by Fraasch, but the save caromed loose in front of the net and Chadick chased it in for the game's first goal.
Minutes later, it was her sister's turn, as Hannah Chadick capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity with a laser beyond the reach of Fraasch to all but put the game away. The goal was Hannah's fourth of the season. She entered the match tied for the WAC lead in assists and currently leads the team with 13 points.
“They've been really good,” head coach Chris Cissell said of the Chadick sisters. “I'm really proud of them. Hannah was hurt for such a long time. It's so good to have her back and healthy. Ellie has just been consistently one of our best players, one of our best attackers, throughout the season.”
In the opposing net, UMKC goalkeeper Nina Tzianos was steady as always, turning away all four shots on net to preserve her fifth shutout of the season.
“Defensively, I think we're very strong,” Cissell said. “I feel like we're a good, solid team that understands what we're trying to do tactically and everyone understands their role. I think that's why we've won six in a row.”
Ten different players have scored for the 'Roos this season with seven players having netted at least two goals. That sort of balance has led to a win streak of historic proportions, as UMKC tied a program mark with its sixth straight win on Friday.
“We're a very hard working team,” said Cissell. “We have a lot of belief in ourselves. I think we're kind of a fun team in the fact that we don't have one go-to player. What's tough about us is, last year they knew how to prepare for us. This year, we have balanced scoring all over the place. New people are stepping up and getting goals, getting assists all the time. I think that makes it tough for teams to prepare for us.”
Kansas City retains first place in the WAC with the victory. The 'Roos will wrap up the conference homestand with a visit from Bakersfield on Sunday.
