The Game
Kansas City heads to Springfield, Mo., for a match with a familiar foe in Missouri State. The Bears (2-7) are fresh off of a 1-0 defeat at the hands of common opponent SIUE. Meanwhile, the 'Roos (3-3-1) are looking to rebound from a 1-0 loss to Creighton a week ago.
The Coaches
In his third year at helm, head coach Chris Cissell is looking to bounce back from a 6-9-4 campaign in 2012. In two seasons, Cissell compiled a record of 14-17-5; marked success for a program that managed just two victories in its first two seasons.
Cissell, who spent a combined 20 seasons at William Jewell as the head coach for the men's and women's soccer programs, compiled a successful record of 299-135-31.
Head coach Rob Brewer is in his 18th season leading Missouri State as the only coach in women's soccer program history. Overall, Missouri State has produced a 161-135-37 record during Brewer's tenure.
In 17 seasons as a program, his team has only three losing campaigns.
Brewer coached the first player in program history to be drafted in Nia Williams, a fourth-round pick (27th overall) in the inaugural NWSL draft by FC Kansas City on January 18, 2012.
The Series
The 'Roos are 0-4 all-time versus Missouri State. Most recently, in 2012, UMKC dropped a 2-1 contest to the Bears at Durwood Stadium.
Scouting the Competition
Missouri State was outstanding at home in 2012. The team's seven shutouts all occurred at Plaster Field. The Bears had six-straight home shutouts and had not allowed a goal at home for 685 consecutive minutes until overtime of the final regular season match.
Through the first nine games of 2013, however, MSU has struggled mightily. The Bears lost five straight to begin the season, and have yet to win a home match.
The 'Roos share three common opponents with Missouri State: SIUE, Central Arkansas and UALR. UMKC is 2-0-1 while MSU is just 1-2.
The Bears are led by senior forward Shelby Stewart. The Springfield, Mo.-native has accounted for two of the team's five goals thus far.
Bidding for 300
UMKC head coach Chris Cissell will once again bid for career win No. 300 when his 'Roos take the field at Plaster Field on Tuesday.
The William Jewell product is 17-18-6 at Kansas City, transfusing life into a program that struggled tremendously in its first two seasons.
In only his first season, Cissell led UMKC to its best finish at 8-8-4 (6-2-1 SL), including a six-game winning streak, Summit League Tournament berth and a league coach of the year honor.
Meanwhile, in his second season, Cissell led the Kangaroos to a 6-9-4 overall record in 2012, including a 3-4-1 finish in Summit League play. At season's end, defender Sarah Todd garnered Second Team All-Summit League honors, while midfielder Hunter Wagoner received All-Summit League Freshmen Team recognition. In the classroom, 13 student-athletes were named to The Summit League's Commissioners List of Academic Excellence.
Before coming to UMKC, Cissell spent a combined 20 seasons at William Jewell as the head coach for the men's and women 's soccer programs, he also served as the director of the soccer programs for the past 11 seasons.
While at William Jewell, Cissell compiled a 282-123-30 overall record in his 20 seasons as head coach. In that time, he has achieved top-10 national rankings with both the men's and women's soccer programs and compiled three Final Four appearances, two with the men and one with the women. Cissell has had eight squads make NAIA National Tournament appearances.
Cissell was named the NSCAA/adidas NAIA Men's National Coach of the Year in 2006 and was a 2010 National Coach of the Year finalist. He has coached 37 all-Americans and mentored 45 Academic all-Americans.
Up Next
The 'Roos will have a quick turnaround following Tuesday's match, as they begin the WAC conference slate with a home-and-home vs. New Mexico State on Friday and Sunday.
UMKC would be well-served to avoid getting comfortable inside of the friendly confines of Durwood Stadium, as well, what with six of its next eight contests on the road.
The Friday night tilt with NMSU is Buck Night on the Kansas City campus.
The Aggies (3-4-1) are led by senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter. Schutter pitched a pair of shutouts over the final non-conference weekend of the season, refusing to relinquish a goal over the course of 200 minutes of action.
At Northern Colorado, Schutter grabbed seven saves, tying a career-high. She helped the Aggies to a 0-0 tie against UNC in double overtime. At Wyoming, she recorded her second shutout of the weekend with a career-high nine saves in the 1-0 victory.
Schutter has three shutouts this season and six in her career, which ties her for first on New Mexico State's career shutout list.
