The Games
The 'Roos will hit the road this weekend for a pair of Western Athletic Conference matches versus a couple of unfamiliar opponents.
On Friday, Kansas City will pay the Wolverines of Utah Valley a visit for the first time in program history. UVU (6-6-1, 3-2-0) and UMKC are deadlocked in second place of the WAC standings with two head-to-head meetings on tap.
Two days later, the Roadrunners (2-9-1, 1-3-1) will host the 'Roos in the first meeting between the two teams. Bakersfield trails a trio of squads that includes Kansas City by two games in the win column for the fourth and final spot at the WAC Championships.
The Coaches
In his third year at helm, head coach Chris Cissell has already matched his team's 2012 win total with six victories. In two seasons, Cissell compiled a record of 14-17-8; marked success for a program that managed just two victories in its first two seasons.
Cissell, who spent a combined 20 seasons at William Jewell as the head coach for the men's and women's soccer programs, led the Cardinals to a combined record of 282-106-22.
The former Summit League Coach of the Year picked up career win No. 300 in a 3-0 win over New Mexico State on Sept. 20.
Brent Anderson, the longest tenured head coach in program history, began his eighth season at the helm of Utah Valley women's soccer in 2013.
Anderson is the one-and-only recipient of the Great West Conference Coach of the Year award, garnering the honor in each of the four years the GWC was in operation.
In all, Anderson owns a 64-69-7 overall record, including a 28-3-1 mark against GWC competition.
Melissa Phillips will began her third season as head women's soccer coach at CSU Bakersfield in 2013, the first for the program in the WAC.
Upon her hire in 2011, at age 23, Phillips was the youngest head coach in Division I.
The Series
The 'Roos will face Utah Valley and Bakersfield for the first time in program history.
Scouting the Competition
Utah Valley went 0-2-0, dropping a 1-0 decision to Idaho before falling 2-0 to Seattle U.
UVU outshot Idaho 21-11, fired 12 shots on target compared to eight from the Vandals, and led in total corner kicks 7-3, but were unable to convert statistical dominance into points on the scoreboard.
UVU has now gone goalless in its last two games, falls to 0-5-0 all-time against Seattle U, and dips into a three-way tie for second place in the WAC.
Bakersfield went 1-1-0 last week, dropping a 2-0 decision to Seattle U before defeating Idaho 1-0.
Emily Noethe scored the lone goal in the victory over Idaho, as the Roadrunners won for the first time since opening day. It was Noethe's second goal of the year and came off an Erica Shelton assist.
Shelton now leads the team in assists (3), goals (3) and shots (26).
Goalkeeper Tori Ornela recorded her second career shutout against Idaho, snapping the program's longest win-less drought (10 games) since moving to Division I.
Up Next
Next weekend, Kansas City will use those frequent flyer miles once more, as they head to Phoenix, Ariz., to face off with Grand Canyon in what will be the team's final road match of the regular season.
In the previous meeting between the 'Roos and 'Lopes, UMKC set program records for goals in a game (6) and goals in a half (4). Senior forward Taylor Bare set a program single-game mark with three goals of her own.
