QUICK NOTES
- Fred Chatmon pulled in a career-best 17 rebounds on Tuesday against Houston Baptist, and recorded his third double-double of the season. His 17 boards were the most for a 'Roo since Spencer Johnson recorded 18 vs. Western Illinois on January 22, 2011.
- Chatmon has now recorded double-digit rebounds in his last two games, moving his total to five this year. He is the only player on the team to have one this season, and one of two to have one in his career here (Trinity Hall).
- Kansas City just came off a road swing in which it won 2-of-3 games in league play. It was the first time the 'Roos have done that since January 27-February 5 of 2011.
- The 'Roos have allowed their last four conference opponents to shoot at least 51 percent from the floor. Offensively though, UMKC has shot at least 48 percent in its last three league games.
- On the season, nine different players have scored double figure points, with eight guys leading the team in points for at least a contest.
- Estan Tyler (.500) and Thomas Staton (.472) rank first and third in the league in three-point shooting, respectively, while Fred Chatmon's 7.8 rebounds per game this season rank third in the Summit League. Chatmon also ranks fourth in blocks (1.3 bpg) while Tyler is sixth in assists (3.1 apg).
- In the last five games, two players are averaging in double-figure points, Estan Tyler (18.3) and Thomas Staton (12.6). The 'Roos have shot .498 during the stretch, but have allowed .531 percent.
- Sophomore forward Alton Tanner was the only player out due to injury, sitting the last five games. Six different players have sat out games due to injury in the last month.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Omaha is 6-16 overall and 3-6 in the Summit league after knocking off South Dakota on the road Thursday. UNO is in its second year as a Division I school after transitioning from D-II.
The Mavericks are led by Justin Simmons with 15.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game, while forward John Karhoff has posted 12.0 points per outing. They are led in rebounding by Alex Welhouse at 4.8 per contest.
As a team the Mavs allow 83.4 points per game and .491 shooting percentage. They also have a -7.9 rebound margin and -2.5 turnover margin. Offensively they score 70.2 points a game and shoot 46.3 percent.
THE COACHES
Matt Brown is in his sixth season as the head coach of the UMKC men's basketball program, and has a 60-113* overall record at the helm. Brown joined the 'Roos as the eighth head coach in school history on April 12, 2007. He has coached eight players to All-Summit League recognition.
His most successful season came in 2010-11 when he posted his only winning record at 16-14 overall. The 'Roos also had the third-most home wins in school history, going 11-4 in Kansas City, and the third-most overall wins in program history that season.
Darrin Hansen is in his eighth season as the head coach at UNO, and has a 127-102 overall record. Last year he led the Mavericks to an 11-18 mark in their first season in Division I. Prior to his time as the head coach, Hansen was an assistant at UNO for seven seasons, and ranks No. 2 all-time in wins there.
THE SERIES
It will be the second time UMKC has faced the Mavericks in Kansas City, and second as a member of the Summit League. earlier this season in Omaha, UNO grabbed a 77-65 win.
Last season they met for the first time as Division I schools, with Kansas City taking the game at home by a 77-74 score. This will be only the third meeting between the two schools in the Division I ranks.
Prior to Division I, UNO held a 4-2 advantage in the series.
Matt Brown is 1-1 vs. Derrin Hansen.
A WIN WOULD MEAN...
- Kansas City would have won its last two home games against UNO, and also have a two-game winning streak in conference play.
- Kansas City would have snapped an eight-game home losing streak.
- The 'Roos would move to 4-5 in conference games this season, winning 3 of its last 4.
