The Bulldogs (4-7-3) had a couple strong scoring chances in the first half, but junior goalkeeper Kevin Corby made the save on one of the attempts inside the Kangaroo (5-5-2) box. Kansas City's best chance of the half came on a David Sarabia open shot from 18 yards out, but it sailed just wide and the teams went into the break scoreless.
The Bulldogs held a 5-4 shot advantage in the period, but the second half was dominated by Kansas City after the opening two minutes of play. Just 1:41 into the period (47th minute), Drake tallied the game's only goal after Addison Eck knocked in a shot that just squeezed by a UMKC defender, trickling in after a near save on the goal line. He took the shot off a rebound from the keeper that Jarred Arde took.
From that point on, it was all Kansas City, as it attempted eight shots and had numerous crosses inside the box that couldn't find a foot. Two big chances came from junior Tom McCarthy mid-way through the half, but both just missed the net. Another chance from Jordan Rideout was saved by the Drake goalkeeper with 11 minutes left off a corner. The final scoring effort of the night also came from Rideout in the final two minutes, but the shot was just off the mark.
UMKC finished the contest out-shooting DU by a 12-8 margin, but forced the Drake keeper to make only two saves to earn the shutout.
The 'Roos will hit the road for their biggest game of the season on Saturday night when they head to Michigan to face Oakland. The Grizzlies are tied with UMKC atop the Summit League standings at 3-0.
