The 'Roos (5-6-2, 3-1 SL) fell behind in the sixth minute when Oakland's (9-4, 4-0 SL) Kyle Bethel finished a shot from 20 yards out. The Grizzlies had an early barrage of opportunities with an early 6-1 shot advantage, but Kansas City turned it around after that, rattling off six straight shots. None of those chances would find the back of the net though.
Oakland took advantage of the missed opportunities in the 45th minute, taking a Kansas City turnover and turning it into a goal by Jeff Cheslik just before the half. UMKC head coach Rick Benben was given a red card following the goal, and had to leave the game.
The Grizzlies took that 2-0 lead into the half, and had a narrow 10-8 advantage in shots.
The second period saw OU make it 3-0 in the 53rd minute when Bethel tallied his second of the game on some combination passing with a finish inside the six yard box.
The 'Roos continued to fight though, and got on the board in the 76th minute when sophomore Jordan Rideout finished a volley from 12 yards out after some combination passing from juniors Tom McCarthy and Tom Gaus.
UMKC took several more chances the rest of the way, but couldn't get any finishes. The Grizzlies finished with a 19-15 advantage in shots.
Up next, the 'Roos will head to Omaha, Nebraska for a Tuesday night contest with No. 24 Creighton.
