
UMKC Falls 84-69 At IUPUI

Indianapolis, Ind. -- The UMKC men's basketball team (16-11, 9-7) dropped its Summit League contest to IUPUI (17-12, 11-6), 84-69 on Saturday night at the Jungle. The 'Roos were out-rebounded in the contest, 38-23, but out-shot the Jaguars from the free throw line, 82.4 percent to 63.6 percent.
Junior Reggie Chamberlain led the UMKC scoring attack with 19 points to go along with three assists and two steals. Senior Bakari Lewis was second on the team with 18 points, while senior Spencer Johnson and sophomore Maxx Rockmann each scored 11.
Rockmann opened the game with a driving layup before burying a three-pointer on the ensuing possession giving the 'Roos the early advantage at 5-2.
Six straight by the Jags gave them their first lead of the game, but two layups by Chamberlain and one by Johnson on three of the next four UMKC possessions put them back on top, 11-10 with 15:49 left in the half.
IUPUI then went on a 13-2 run over the next 6:05, building its lead to 10, before a Chamberlain basket ended the run.
After a pair of Jaguar free throws, the 'Roos cut the lead to five at 25-20 on a layup from Johnson and a three from Chamberlain.
IUPUI answered with another extended run, this time scoring nine straight to extend its lead to a half high of 14 with 4:21 remaining in the first.
Five straight points from Johnson sliced the lead back to single digits, and after four IUPUI points, Chamberlain and Bakari Lewis hit back-to-back threes, cutting the lead to seven.
IUPUI then closed the half with a pair of free throws to take a 40-31 lead into the break.
Coming out of halftime, Chamberlain drilled his third three of the game on the opening possession to cut the lead to six.
IUPUI then pushed its lead back to eight before using a 12-2 run to extend its lead to 18.
UMKC cut the deficit to 15, but the Jags would score nine of the next 11 points to push the lead to 69-48 with 10:29 left in regulation.
The Jaguars would go on to build their lead to as many as 23 before closing it out 84-69.
In the game, UMKC shot 45.1 percent from the field but allowed IUPUI to shoot 54.1 percent and dish out 21 assists. Defensively, UMKC forced 15 turnovers, including six on steals.
The Blue and Gold will be back in action again on Thursday when they welcome in Oakland to Kansas City for a 7:05 p.m. contest at the Swinney Recreation Center.
