Lawrence, Kan. -- The UMKC men's basketball team (8-7) dropped its game with Kansas, 99-52, on Wednesday night at Allen Fieldhouse. The 'Roos attempted eight more free throws than the Jayhawks, but only converted 54.8 percent of their attempts.
Senior Jay Couisnard and Bakari Lewis led the UMKC scoring attack, as each finished with a game-high 16 points. Junior Bernard Kamwa, meanwhile, registered a new career-high with 10 rebounds.
The Jayhawks opened up with the game's first 15 points, before three straight Couisnard free throws and a Chamberlain three-pointer cut the lead to 15-6 with 13:29 left in the first.
Kansas would extend its lead to 23-6 when a Lewis driving lay-up ended the run.
Kansas would then go on a 14-2 run, with the 'Roos getting a jumper from freshman Trinity Hall over the stretch.
The 'Roos would then go on a 5-0 run of their own, with Couisnard knocking down another set of free throws and Lewis converting a layup and free throw, cutting the lead to 37-15 with 5:17 to play.
The Jayhawks would answer with the next seven points before a 10-8 UMKC run, including a Couisnard putback dunk, cut the lead to 52-24 at the half.
KU would again come out of the gate strong in the second, opening the half with a 12-2 run, before three straight UMKC points ended the run.
UMKC would then cut the lead to 67-32 on a Chamberlain three, but six straight Kansas points pushed the lead to 73-32.
The 'Roos would then answer with a 10-2 run, including four points from Couisnard and a three-pointer from Lewis, slicing the lead to 75-42 with 10:58 remaining in the game.
10 straight points from the Jayhawks though, would increase the lead to 85-42, before a Lewis free throw ended the rally.
Kansas would then go on an 11-2 run, before a Lewis jumper, with 3:12 left in the game, ended an 8:11 drought without a field goal for the 'Roos.
After three KU free throws, UMKC would close the game out with the final five points to put the final score at 99-52.
In the game, Kansas out-shot the 'Roos 55.7 percent to 30.2 percent, but only out-rebounded the much shorter 'Roos 37-33.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Saturday when they resume Summit League play against Southern Utah. The game will be the 'Roos only contest at Municipal Auditorium, their longtime home, and tip at 7:05 p.m.
