
'Roos Fall In Double Overtime, 89-88 To North Dakota State.

Fargo, N.D. -- The UMKC men's basketball team (13-9, 6-5) fell in its double overtime contest with North Dakota State (11-10, 5-6), 89-88, after a last second layup by the Bison in double overtime.
Senior Jay Couisnard led the 'Roos with a team-high 28 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Fellow senior Spencer Johnson finished with eight points and 10 rebounds, the first of which broke the tie at the top of the UMKC career rebounding list, giving the forward 649 caroms in his four year career, a UMKC record. Bakari Lewis and Trinity Hall were the only other 'Roos in double figures, as each finished with 14 points.
The Bison opened up with the games first two points, but a four-point play from Couisnard on the ensuing possession put the 'Roos on top 4-2.
NDSU quickly recaptured the lead at 9-8 and extended it to three at 13-10, before a 5-0 run, capped by a Johnson three, put the 'Roos back in front 15-13.
North Dakota State then used a 14-2 run to build a 10 point lead before the 'Roos went on an 8-1 run of their own.
During the stretch, Hall scored six of the 'Roos baskets to cut the lead to three at 28-25 with 5:14 remaining in the half.
The Bison then extended its lead back to seven, but five straight from UMKC trimmed the margin to two at 36-34 with 1:10 to play.
North Dakota State then added a pair of free throws to take at 38-34 lead into the intermission.
Coming out of the break, the 'Roos closed the margin to one on the first possession on a Johnson three-pointer from the top of the key.
After a NDSU free throw, Couisnard buried a jumper from the right elbow to tie the game at 39 with 17:52 to go.
The two teams then went back-and-forth before a three-pointer from Lewis gave the 'Roos a 55-54 lead with 12:23 to play, their first lead since the 12:29 mark of the first half.
The Bison would retake the lead at 59-57, but back-to-back threes from Max Rockmann and Michael Gholston, Jr., gave UMKC a 63-59 advantage with 9:07 remaining in the game.
Four straight from the Bison tied the game at 63, but another Rockmann three put the 'Roos back in front 66-63.
NDSU then answered with six straight, taking a 69-66 lead before a 7-4 run by UMKC, capped by a Couisnard free throw knotted the game at 73 with 1:34 to play.
After a North Dakota State basket, Hall was fouled on a three and converted 2-of-3 attempts to tie the game with 48.9 seconds left to go.
The 'Roos then picked up a stop on the defensive end, giving them one last chance to end the game in regulation with 11.4 seconds on the clock.
On the final play, Lewis got a pick from Johnson at the top of the key, but could not hit the jumper, sending the 'Roos to their fourth overtime game of the season.
In overtime, the Bison struck first with a pair of free throws, but Reggie Chamberlain answered with a three-pointer and Dustin Dibble followed with a free throw on the next possession to put the 'Roos up one with 1:19 to go in the overtime.
NDSU retied the game on their next possession, and, after each team went scoreless on their next attempts, the ball was in 'Roos hands with 11.2 seconds left to play.
This time, Couisnard drove the lane and could not get the layup to go, sending UMKC to its second double overtime contest of the year.
In the second overtime period, North Dakota State again struck first, but a pair of Couisnard free throws tied the game at 81 with 2:22 to play.
Three straight free throws from the Bison put them back in front 84-81, but another set of Couisnard free throws sliced the lead back to one with 1:22 left in the second overtime.
After a stop on the defensive end by the 'Roos, Johnson tipped in his own miss with 10 seconds left, putting UMKC in front 85-84.
On their next possession, NDSU's Michael Tveidt spun in the lane missed the jumper, but Johnson's fifth foul sent Tveidt to the line where he hit his first free throw but missed the second. NDSU though collected the rebound and Eric Carlson made the put-back for his 32nd point of the night, putting the Bison ahead by two with seven seconds left.
With one final possession, Bakari Lewis brought the ball up, dribbled to the right wing, put up a three and was fouled sending him to the line. At the line, the senior buried all three shots to put UMKC back in front with 3.4 seconds left to play.
The Bison though, inbounded the ball to halfcourt where they took a timeout with 2.6 second on the clock. Following the timeout, Carlson inbounded the ball from the left sideline to Tveidt on the opposite block, where the forward laid in the game winning basket.
In the game, the 'Roos out-shot the Bison from three-point range 36.0 percent to 33.3 percent, but converted only 19 of their 34 free throws, while NDSU made 26 of their 34.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again next Saturday when they head to Cedar City, Utah to take on Southern Utah at 8:30 p.m.
