Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC men's basketball team (8-6, 1-3) dropped its first home game of the season, 91-71, to South Dakota State (9-4, 1-1) on Thursday night at the Swinney Recreation Center. The 'Roos led 39-36 at the half, but were out-scored 55-32 in the second, allowing the Jackrabbits to shoot 63.6 percent from the field in the half.
Senior Spencer Johnson finished the game with team-highs of 19 points and nine rebounds, while junior Reggie Chamberlain was second on the team with 18 points, adding six rebounds and three assists. Senior Jay Couisnard was the only other 'Roo in double figures, scoring 15 points, while notching five rebounds, three steals, two blocks and two assists.
In the first half, the two squads battled back-and-forth, as the game featured five ties and nine lead changes, while neither team led by more than five points before the break.
Late in the half, the 'Roos trailed 36-35, but a pair of Trinity Hall free throws and a Reggie Chamberlain layup at the buzzer gave UMKC the three point lead at 39-36.
Coming out of the break, the two teams continued to battle with SDSU holding a one point lead at 48-47 with 16:06 remaining.
From that point, the Jacks went on a 14-2 run to take a 62-49 lead with 9:39 left in the game.
South Dakota State would then extend its lead to 14, but the 'Roos would continue to fight, closing the margin to 10 with 7:16 left to play.
The Jackrabbits though would be too much, scoring 18 of the final 27 points to hand the 'Roos their first home loss of the season.
On the glass, the two teams each notched 30 rebounds, while the 'Roos blocked six SDSU shots.
UMKC will be back in action next when they travel west to Lawrence, Kan., to take on the Jayhawks on Jan. 5. The game between UMKC and Kansas is set for a 7 p.m. tip.
