
'Roos Move To 6-0 At Home With 73-51 Win Over Houston Baptist

Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC men's basketball team (7-4) picked up its sixth straight home win to open the season after defeating Houston Baptist (1-10), 73-51, on Tuesday night at the Swinney Recreation Center. The 'Roos scored 28 points off 21 Huskie turnovers, while out-scoring them 26-16 in the paint.
Junior Reggie Chamberlain led the UMKC scoring attack, registering a career-high 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including 5-of-8 from three-point range, while also dishing out four assists. Senior Jay Couisnard, meanwhile, chipped in 14 points, along with six rebounds, six assists, two steals and a block. Fellow senior Spencer Johnson finished with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Bakari Lewis added 15 points and four assists.
UMKC opened up the contest with an 8-0 run, over the game's first three minutes, that was capped by a Lewis three.
Houston Baptist would get the contest's next five points, but the 'Roos would answer with a 5-0 run of their own to take a 13-5 lead with 15:14 left in the first half.
The Huskies would then pull to within five at 17-12, before a scoreless stretch of three minutes would take over the game.
Houston Baptist would end the drought with a jumper to cut the lead to three with 9:32 left to play, but a 12-4 UMKC run would extend the lead to 29-18 with 3:13 remaining.
The Huskies would then out-score the 'Roos 8-7 over the final 3:13, giving UMKC a 36-26 advantage heading into the half.
UMKC would then open the second half on an 18-8 run to extend its lead to 20 at 54-34 with 12:01 left in the game.
Houston Baptist would not go away though, as an 11-2 run by the Huskies cut the lead to 11 with 7:47 to go.
The 'Roos would respond with a 10-2 run of their own that pushed their lead back to 19 with 2:53 left to play.
The Huskies would get no closer than 18 the rest of the way, while a Jay Couisnard dunk would be the game's final points and give the 'Roos their largest lead at 73-51.
For the third straight home game, the 'Roos buried 10 or more threes, knocking down 12-of 31 on the night, while out-scoring the Huskies 12-7 on second chance points and 16-2 on fast break points.
The Blue & Gold will have a quick turnaround after tonight's win, as the squad will head to Manhattan, Kan., to take on No. 11 Kansas State at 7:05 p.m. in Bramlage Coliseum.
