Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC women's soccer team dropped a hard fought overtime match to Oakland, 2-1, at Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field. The Kangaroos end the 2010 season with a 1-15-2 overall record and a 0-7-2 Summit League record, while the Golden Grizzlies improve to 12-5-2 overall and 8-0-1 in league play. Despite the loss, Alyssa D'Egidio scored her first goal of the season and Jami Finnell recorded seven saves.
The first half was uneventful, as neither team was able to score a goal. Oakland had a few opportunities but couldn't find the back of the net. The Golden Grizzlies had six shots in the first period compared to the Kangaroos three.
Both teams showed more urgency in the second half but things got really exciting around the 70th minute.
AN Oakland foul near the 40-yard line would setup a free kick for the Kangaroos. D'Egidio lined up to take the free kick and sent the ball sailing towards the goal, catching the Oakland goalkeeper out of position. The sophomore's kick slipped right through the finger tips of Shannon Coley, resulting in D'Egidio's first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead for the `Roos.
Unfortunately the Kangaroos wouldn't hold the lead for long, as the Golden Grizzlies were awarded a penalty kick after a UMKC foul in the box. Dani Haelewyn pushed the ball past Finnell in the 77th minute to tie the match, 1-1, and send the game into overtime.
UMKC had some good opportunities in the first overtime period but kept coming up short. With time running out, Oakland was able to find the back of the net to end the overtime period for the win. Nicole DeLuca crossed the ball in from the side line and found the head of Sarah Lynch, who put it past Finnell in the 99th minute.
