
Sosa's Hat Trick Leads 'Roos To 4-1 Win Over IPFW

Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC men's soccer team picked up its ninth victory of the season with a 4-1 win over IPFW on Saturday night at Durwood Soccer Stadium and Recreational Field. Senior John Bayron Sosa put on an offensive display for the 'Roos, as the midfielder notched a hat trick - the eighth in school history - to lead his squad to the victory on Senior Day.
Sosa notched his first goal in the fifth minute on a free kick from the left side of the box. The St. Cloud, Fla., native rocketed an unassisted strike into the lower left side of the net past IPFW goalkeeper Shari Clarke. UMKC then controlled the action for the remainder of the half, but it only managed to take the 1-0 lead into the break.
Following the Senior Day recognition at halftime, the 'Roos poured it on offensively in the second half. Junior Jimmy Simon netted his sixth goal of the season in the 52nd minute to make the score 2-0. Sophomore David Sarabia sent a pass to Simon, before the forward beat Clarke into the lower left corner.
A little more than two minutes later, Sosa went back to work, as he netted his second goal of the night. Sarabia was again credited with the assist following the touch and go, before Sosa fired his shot to the far left corner to make the score 3-0.
Sosa then joined an elite group when he netted his third goal for the hat trick in the 62nd minute. The midfielder rocketed an unassisted strike from just outside the box into the lower left hand corner, making the score 4-0.
IPFW avoided the shutout and ended senior Ken Cooper's scoreless streak with a goal in the 77th minute. Grant Welter sent a cross to the far side of the box, where Danny Ly coraled the ball before scoring to the far side of the net. Cooper's scoreless streak reached 515:36 minutes prior to allowing the Mastodon strike.
UMKC cleared its bench for the for the final 20 minutes of the game, as 10 reserves saw action. The 'Roos held a 17-7 advantage in overall shots and a 7-2 edge in shots on goal. UMKC also had six corner kicks to just three for the 'Dons.
Cooper made one save in goal to pick up his ninth win of the season. Redshirt freshman Kyle Martin closed out the game for his first collegiate action, playing 11:30 minutes.
UMKC (9-3-2, 3-0-1) will return to action on Tuesday night when it heads across the state to face Saint Louis.
