UMKC & Saint Louis To Meet In An I-70 Showdown On Tuesday

The Setting - The UMKC men's soccer team will put its six-game unbeaten streak on the line on Tuesday night when it heads east on I-70 to square off against Saint Louis. The 'Roos and Billikens will meet at Hermann Stadium in St. Louis, Mo., beginning at 7 p.m.

Scouting Saint Louis - The Billikens enter Tuesday's game with a 4-6-2 overall record and a 2-3-0 mark in Atlantic 10 action. SLU is 2-4 during its previous six contests, all of which were on the road. During their last two contests, the Billikens won at George Washington (1-0) before dropping a 3-1 decision at Charlotte.
SLU has seven players that have netted at least one goal this season with Adnan Gabeljic, Christian Briggs, Jimmy Holmes and Devon Newport pacing the squad with two strikes apiece. Alex Sweetin leads the team in points with five, courtesy of one goal and three assists. Nick Shackelford has played a majority of the minutes in goal for the Billikens, where he has posted a 0.82 goals against average with 30 saves and four shutouts.
The Series - Saint Louis leads the all-time series over UMKC by the count of 6-0-0, as all six contests have been played in St. Louis. Last season, the 'Roos led 2-0 before SLU scored three times in the second half to rally for the 3-2 victory.
Last Game - Senior John Bayron Sosa put on an offensive showcase to lead the 'Roos to a 4-1 win over IPFW on Senior Day at DSSRF. The midfielder netted a hat trick in the contest, while Ken Cooper made one save in 77 minutes of work in between the posts.

Sosa is just the second 'Roo student-athlete to earn the College Soccer News honor, joining teammate Matt Kopsky, who earned the nod in 2008.

It is the third straight season that the 'Roos have had a player score a hat trick. Streaks Come To A Halt - Senior Ken Cooper had his four-match shutout streak and his 515:36 scoreless stretch come to a halt in the 4-1 win over IPFW on Oct. 23. Prior to allowing the goal to the 'Dons, Cooper hadn't been scored on since the first half of the 4-2 win over Oral Roberts.

'Roos Seventh In NSCAA Midwest Region Rankings - Despite going a perfect 2-0 last week, UMKC dropped to seventh in the NSCAA Midwest Region rankings that were released on Oct. 25. The 'Roos have been in the rankings since Sept. 13, when they debuted at ninth. It is the team's first ranking since the 2008 campaign when it climbed to as high as third in the region before finishing the year ranked sixth.
Summit League POW Honorees - The 'Roos have had five student-athletes be recognized as The Summit League Player of the Week.
Senior Ken Cooper was the first 'Roo to earn the honor, as he was named the Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 13 after making four saves in 110 minutes of action in the 1-1 draw at Loyola Chicago.

Overall, UMKC has been exceptional at home the past three seasons, as it has compiled a 18-3 record over its past 21 home dates.
Spreading The Wealth - Four UMKC players have netted their first collegiate game-winning goals and a total of six different 'Roos have netted the GWG this season. Freshman Zachary Balthazar joined the first club with Jimmy Simon, Diego Rojas and Tom Black when he found the back of the net in the 1-0 triumph over Illinois-Chicago.
Offensive Outburst - UMKC has netted four goals in a pair of game this season - in victories over Oral Roberts (4-2) and IPFW (4-1). The scoring outputs matches Oakland for the team-high in The Summit League this season.

Mr. Shutout - Senior Ken Cooper posted his fourth straight shutout in leading the 'Roos to a 1-0 win over Illinois-Chicago on Oct. 19. The performance came on the heels of a 1-0 win at Centenary on Oct. 9, an identical 1-0 shutout of Eastern Illinois on Oct. 3 and a 0-0 draw at Oakland.
Cooper, who is pacing the league with seven shutouts on the year, also blanked Central Arkansas and Missouri State in back-to-back contests and goose-egged Columbia College earlier this season. His seven shutouts are tied for the most in a single season in school history.

Markey Sidelined For '10 Season - Senior Chris Markey, who is one of UMKC's co-captains for the 2010 season, suffered a foot injury during the exhibition contest against Drake on Aug. 27. The midfielder broke his foot while going in for a tackle, which will force him to miss the remainder of the 2010 season.
Markey is the second UMKC senior to suffer a serious injury this season. Matt Kopsky, a returning starter and three-year letterwinner, went down with a knee injury prior to the beginning of preseason practice. He too will miss the entire 2010 campaign.
'Roos Tabbed As Preseason Favorites - UMKC was picked as the preseason favorite to claim the 2010 Summit League title. The 'Roos received three first place votes en route to 33 points to edge Oakland by a single point for the top spot.
Sosa Named To MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List - Senior John Bayron Sosa has been named to the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. The St. Cloud, Fla., native is the first UMKC player to be named to the Watch List and is one of 39 Division I men's soccer players and the lone representative of The Summit League to be recognized.
Considered the highest individual honor in intercollegiate soccer, the recipient of the MAC Hermann Trophy is selected by Division I head coaches who are current members of the NSCAA.
Team Captains - Seniors John Bayron Sosa and Chris Markey have been selected to serve as the team co-captains for the 2010 'Roos.
Back-to-Back OPOY - The 'Roos have not only led the league in scoring in each of the past two seasons, but the squad boasts each of the past two Summit League Offensive Player of the Years.
