The Setting
The UMKC men's basketball team will round out its season in Rochester, Mich., on Saturday night at Oakland. The Kangaroos and Golden Eagles will tip-off the contest at the O'Rena beginning at 5 p.m. (CST).
On The Air
Saturday's game will be aired on 1480 AM with the “Voice of the Kangaroos” Steven Davis calling the play-by-play with Nick McCabe serving as the color commentator. Davis is the son of long-time Kansas and Royals play-by-play announcer Bob Davis.
Last Game
The Kangaroos dropped a 76-71 road decision at IPFW on Thursday night at Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne. The Mastodons used a 14-7 lead midway through the second half to build a seven point advantage (64-57) before UMKC began battling back. The ?Roos fought to within two (68-66) with 1:20 remaining, but IPFW made all eight of its free throws in the final 54 seconds to run out five-point winners.
Game Notes
- UMKC did an outstanding job taking care of the basketball, as it committed just seven turnovers in the contest. The seven TOs are the second fewest in a game this season (5 - at EWU) and it was the fifth game that the squad has had fewer than 10 turnovers.
- The ?Roos made six long balls at IPFW - the most for the team since the Jan. 22 match-up at Oral Roberts.

The Golden Grizzlies have won six straight contests to improve to 19-11 overall and 12-5 in The Summit League, which is good for third place. On Thursday, OU used a double-double by Keith Benson to top Southern Utah, 78-62.
Three Oakland players are averaging in double figures on the season with Erik Kangas leading the way with 18.6 points (3rd in SL) on .437 shooting from the floor and .424 from long range. The guard has made 114 long balls on the year. Benson is second on the team with 13.9 points to go along with a team-high 7.5 rebounds, while guard Johnathon Jones is averaging 13.4 points and 7.6 assists per game.

The Kangaroos dropped an 84-78 decision to Oakland in their Summit League opener on Dec. 4 in Kansas City. UMKC battled back from a 10-point second half deficit to take the 77-76 lead with 1:11 remaining, but the Grizzlies scored eight of the final nine points to run out six point winners.
Three ?Roo players finished the game in double digits with a pair of student-athletes posting double-doubles. Dane Brumagin led all scorers with 29 points and 10 boards, while Spencer Johnson had 20 points and 13 rebounds. Reggie Hamilton rounded out the double figure scorers, as he finished with 15 points to go along with nine assists. Brumagin Ties School Record For Most Games Played
Senior Dane Brumagin gutted his way to tying Michael Watson's school record, as he played six minutes on Thursday night at IPFW. The Montgomery City, Mo., native, who has been battling an Achilles injury for the past month, has played in 117 games in his Kangaroo career.
Michigan Natives Return Home
Saturday's game at Oakland will mark freshmen Latreze Mushatt and Dustin Dibble's return to their home state of Michigan. Mushatt played prep ball at Saginaw's Arthur Hill High School, while Dibble attended Petoskey High School in Petoskey, Mich.
Growing Pains
The Kangaroos have been in a majority of their games this season, but the youthful squad hasn't been able to get over the hump in the close contests. The trend continued on Thursday when UMKC dropped a 76-71 decision at IPFW. The loss drops the team's record to 5-11 in games decided by seven points or less and 2-6 in games decided by six points or fewer.
Brumagin Leads Team In Scoring On Senior Night
Senior Dane Brumagin reached double figures for the 19th time this season, despite playing with a sore Achilles, on Feb. 21 against Oral Roberts. The forward made 6-of-14 shot attempts to finish with 16 points. It was the 13th time this season that he has led the team in scoring.
For the year, the Montgomery City, Mo., native ranks eighth in the league with a 15.3 per game average. On the year, Brumagin has hit the 20-point mark in a total of seven games, which includes a season-high 34 points against SIU Edwardsville on Dec. 28.
For his career, Brumagin has scored in double digits in 57 games and in 23 of those contest he has hit the 20-point mark.

Freshman Trey McKinney-Jones has become more assertive the with basketball in his hands over the last four games, and it has led to the forward reaching double digits in three of four contests.
The Wisconsin native finished with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting at IPFW on Thursday night, as it was his fourth game this season in double figures. On Feb. 19, McKinney-Jones became the third ?Roo this season to post a double-double, as he finished with 11 points and 11 boards in the win over Centenary.
Crashing The Boards
Freshman Trey McKinney-Jones has led the ?Roos in rebounding in three of the last four contests. During the four-game stretch, the forward is averaging a team-best 7.3 caroms per game.
One Fine Season On The Boards
Sophomore Spencer Johnson needs just three rebounds to surpass the 200 board mark for the year. The forward's 197 caroms currently are the eighth most in a single season in school history and his 6.6 per game average is the highest since the 2005-06 season (Dee Ayuba - 6.7).
BK Overtakes Spencer In Season Scoring Average
Sophomore Bakari Lewis overtook teammate Spencer Johnson in season scoring average with his 17-point performance at IPFW on Thursday night. Lewis, who has now reached double figures in nine games on the year, is averaging 10.5 points.
The Ohio native has reached double digits in four straight and in six of the last seven games, which included back-to-back 23 point outputs against IUPUI and Southern Utah.
Mushatt Ending Season On A Strong Note
Latreze Mushatt is closing out his freshman campaign strong has he has scored in double digits in nine of the last 11 games. The forward has posted new career highs three times during the stretch, which included an 18-point scoring output at South Dakota State on Feb. 14.
On the year, Mushatt has scored in double digits in 14 contests and he is averaging 9.2 points and 5.6 rebounds.

Senior Dane Brumagin moved past David Robinson into sixth place in the UMKC record books in career scoring with his 34-point performance against SIU Edwardsville on Dec. 28. The forward, who is just the ninth player in school history to reach the 1,000-point milestone, currently has 1,360 career points, which is 44 points behind Quinton Day (1,404) for fifth place all-time.
Switch-A-Roo
Head Coach Matt Brown used his 17th different starting line-up on Thursday night at IPFW. In total, 10 different Kangaroo players have started at least one game.
Hitting At 50 Percent
The Kangaroos finished with a 50 percent field goal percentage (25-50) on Jan. 15 against South Dakota State. It was just the third game this season that the squad has finished at 50 percent or better. UMKC is 3-0 when hitting at least 50 percent of its shot attempts with wins over Wichita State, Bradley and SDSU.
Trez Grabs Career-High In Rebounds

Sophomore Spencer Johnson has been a beast on the boards for the Kangaroos this season despite regularly facing taller players at the five position throughout the year. The 6-6 forward is tied for second in The Summit League with seven games with 10 or more rebounds. The Illinois native is leading the team with 6.6 rebounds per game, which is seventh in the league. He is also third in the league with 2.5 offensive rebounds per contest.
Improving His All Around Game

The Champaign Ill., native has been UMKC's most consistent post player this season, as he's averaging 10.3 points per game, while shooting .473 from the floor. Johnson has emerged into a play maker for the Kangaroos after scoring 54 points (1.8 ppg.) as a freshman in 2007-08.

Spence's December To Remember
Sophomore Spencer Johnson had an outstanding month of December for the Kangaroos, as he averaged a double-double with 14.9 points and 10.4 rebounds. The Illinois native posted five straight double-doubles to lead the nation from Dec. 4 to Dec. 18. He posted career-highs in points three times during the month and in rebounds on a pair of occasions.
Summit League Player of the Week Honorees
The Kangaroos have had a pair of student-athletes earn Summit League Player of the Week honors this season after having just one honoree in 2007-08.
Sophomore Spencer Johnson earned the team's first POW honor on Dec. 22 after posting back-to-back double-doubles at Northwestern and Eastern Washington on Dec. 15 and Dec. 18. The forward had 22 points and 12 boards against NU before finishing with a career-best 23 points and 11 boards at EWU.
Senior Dane Brumagin became the second straight Kangaroo to earn the Player of the Week accolade on Dec. 28 after averaging 30 points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists in a pair of contests. The forward scored 26 points against UTSA before following it up with a season-high 34 points against SIU Edwardsville.
Brumagin Named A Semifinalist For The Lowe's Senior CLASS Award
Dane Brumagin was named to the initial list of 30 candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. The award, given annually to senior student-athletes across nine NCAA Division I sports, has become one of the most prestigious honors in college athletics and is sponsored by Lowe's, an Official Corporate Partner of the NCAA. Based on criteria focusing on the “Four C's” of classroom, character, community and competition, the award winners will be selected by national balloting of head basketball coaches, national media and college basketball fans.
The 2008 candidates on the men's sides included student-athletes from 27 different schools from around the country representing 14 conferences. Brumagin was the lone representative from The Summit League.
UMKC Surpasses 2007-08 Road Win Total
The Kangaroos surpassed their 2007-08 road win total when they defeated Eastern Washington on Dec. 18 in Cheney. The squad is 3-12 on the road this season. Last year, UMKC went 2-13 in games away from Kansas City.
The Kangaroos picked up their first road victory at Wichita State on Nov. 19. The win was the program's first win in Wichita and the first road victory against a Missouri Valley Conference opponent. The win over WSU was also the largest crowd (10,282) that UMKC has won in front of since the squad topped Oral Roberts in from of 10,331 fans at the Mabee Center during the 2004-05 season.

Senior Dane Brumagin has swiped at least two steals in 14 games for the Kangaroos this season. Brumagin has a total of 38 steals or 1.5 per game, which is sixth in The Summit League this season.
Closing Out On The 3's
UMKC has been contesting the three-point shots well throughout the season. The Kangaroos are third in The Summit League in allowing its opposition to shoot 33.4 percent (161-482) from three-point range. UMKC has held its opponents under 30 percent from three-point land in a total of 13 games on the year.
Spence's December To Remember
Sophomore Spencer Johnson had an outstanding month of December for the Kangaroos, as he averaged a double-double with 14.9 points and 10.4 rebounds. The Illinois native posted five straight double-doubles to lead the nation from Dec. 4 to Dec. 18. He posted career-highs in points three times during the month and in rebounds on a pair of occasions.
Summit League Player of the Week Honorees
The Kangaroos have had a pair of student-athletes earn Summit League Player of the Week honors this season after having just one honoree in 2007-08.
Sophomore Spencer Johnson earned the team's first POW honor on Dec. 22 after posting back-to-back double-doubles at Northwestern and Eastern Washington on Dec. 15 and Dec. 18. The forward had 22 points and 12 boards against NU before finishing with a career-best 23 points and 11 boards at EWU.
Senior Dane Brumagin became the second straight Kangaroo to earn the Player of the Week accolade on Dec. 28 after averaging 30 points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists in a pair of contests. The forward scored 26 points against UTSA before following it up with a season-high 34 points against SIU Edwardsville.
Brumagin Named A Semifinalist For The Lowe's Senior CLASS Award
Dane Brumagin was named to the initial list of 30 candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. The award, given annually to senior student-athletes across nine NCAA Division I sports, has become one of the most prestigious honors in college athletics and is sponsored by Lowe's, an Official Corporate Partner of the NCAA. Based on criteria focusing on the “Four C's” of classroom, character, community and competition, the award winners will be selected by national balloting of head basketball coaches, national media and college basketball fans.
The 2008 candidates on the men's sides included student-athletes from 27 different schools from around the country representing 14 conferences. Brumagin was the lone representative from The Summit League.
UMKC Surpasses 2007-08 Road Win Total
The Kangaroos surpassed their 2007-08 road win total when they defeated Eastern Washington on Dec. 18 in Cheney. The squad is 3-12 on the road this season. Last year, UMKC went 2-13 in games away from Kansas City.
The Kangaroos picked up their first road victory at Wichita State on Nov. 19. The win was the program's first win in Wichita and the first road victory against a Missouri Valley Conference opponent. The win over WSU was also the largest crowd (10,282) that UMKC has won in front of since the squad topped Oral Roberts in from of 10,331 fans at the Mabee Center during the 2004-05 season.

UMKC has made at least one three-point basket in 275 consecutive regular season or tournament games dating back to January 22, 2000.
