
UMKC Hits The Road To Face IPFW On Thursday

The Setting
The UMKC men's basketball team will round out its season this weekend with a pair of road contests beginning with a Thursday night match-up at IPFW. The Kangaroos and Mastodons will square of at Memorial Coliseum beginning at 6 p.m. (CST).
On The Air
Thursday's game will be aired on 810 AM WHB with the “Voice of the Kangaroos” Steven Davis calling the play-by-play with Nick McCabe serving as the color commentator. Davis is the son of long-time Kansas and Royals play-by-play announcer Bob Davis.
Last Game
The Kangaroos dropped a 93-62 decision to Oral Roberts in the 2009 home finale on Saturday night at Municipal Auditorium. The Golden Eagles led by 20 points (48-28) at the half before stretching its lead to as many 38 points in the second half. UMKC had three players finish in double figures in the contest with senior Dane Brumagin leading the way with 16 points.
Game Notes
- ORU made 8-of-11 three-point field goals in the first half and 10-of-19 long balls for the game. Guard Robert Jarvis connected six of the team's 10 three-pointers.
- Senior Dane Brumagin rejoined the starting line-up on Saturday night against ORU. It was his first start since Jan. 29 against Western Illinois.
Scouting IPFW
IPFW enters Thursday's contest with an 11-16 overall record and a 6-10 mark in Summit League play. Last weekend, the Mastodons put themselves in a good position to make the league tournament with an 82-74 victory at Western Illinois.
IPFW has a pair of players averaging in double figures on the season with forward David Carson leading the way with 14.8 points to go along with 5.6 boards. Guard Ben Botts is second on the team with a 11.1 scoring clip with a .414 three-point field goal percentage and a .919 clip from long range.
The Mastodons are shooting .433 from the floor and .734 from long range en route to 65.3 points per game. The squad is -3.9 (30.3-34.2) on the glass and it averages 10.7 assists to 13.1 turnovers per game.
IPFW Game Notes
- UMKC will meet IPFW for the second time this season on Thursday in Fort Wayne after an 82 day span since the first encounter on Dec. 6.
- IPFW has won three of its last five games, which includes a 74-65 win over Oral Roberts on Feb. 7 in Fort Wayne.
- Forward Deilvez Yearby, who transferred to IPFW from Kansas State, is averaging 8.7 points and 6.2 rebounds while playing primarily in a reserve role this season. The 6.2 boards is the eighth best per game average in the league this season.
- Ben Botts is the top free throw shooter in The Summit League with a .919 percentage. As a team, IPFW is third in the league with a .734 mark.
UMKC-IPFW - First Meeting - Dec. 6, 2008
The Kangaroos picked up their first Summit League victory of the season with their 70-62 win over IPFW on Dec. 6 at Municipal Auditorium. UMKC used a 12-2 run midway through the second half to build a 57-47 lead, and it never looked back in the eight point victory.
A pair of ?Roo players finished in double digits in the win, as Dane Brumagin led all scorers with 28 points on 8-of-18 shooting. Spencer Johnson, meanwhile, posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. David Carson was the high scorer for the Mastodons in the game, as he finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.
UMKC In Close Contests
The Kangaroos are 5-10 in games decided by seven points or less this season. In Summit League action, UMKC is 2-6 in games decided by six points or fewer.
One Game Ties; Two Games Break School Record
Senior Dane Brumagin will tie the school record for most games played on Thursday night at IPFW. An appearance in Saturday's regular season finale will break Michael Watson's school record of 116 games played.
Brumagin Leads Team In Scoring On Senior Night
Senior Dane Brumagin reached double figures for the 19th time this season, despite playing with a sore Achilles, on Saturday night against Oral Roberts. The forward made 6-of-14 shot attempts to finish with 16 points. It was the 13th time this season that he has led the team in scoring.
For the year, the Montgomery City, Mo., native ranks eighth in the league with a 15.8 per game average. On the year, Brumagin has hit the 20-point mark in a total of seven games, which includes a season-high 34 points against SIU Edwardsville on Dec. 28.
For his career, Brumagin has scored in double digits in 57 games and in 23 of those contest he has hit the 20-point mark.
Dane Quickies
- Senior Dane Brumagin has made at least one long ball in 22-of-26 games this season and in 90-of-116 games in his career.
- Brumagin made his 73rd career start on Saturday against Oral Roberts. The figure ranks 10th in school history for most career starts.
TMJ Joins The Double-Double Club
After a 15-game drought, freshman Trey McKinney-Jones became the third member of the 2008-09 double-double club on Feb. 19 in the win over Centenary. The forward finished with 11 points on 2-of-6 shooting to go along with a career-high 11 rebounds. The Wisconsin native did most of his damage from the free throw line where he made 7-of-12 attempts.
Crashing The Boards
Freshman Trey McKinney-Jones has led the ?Roos in rebounding in each of the last three contests. During the three-game stretch, the forward is averaging a team-best 8.3 caroms per game.
BK Stepping Up His Play
Sophomore Bakari Lewis has stepped up his offensive play over the past six games for the Kangaroos. The Ohio native has reached double figures in five of the six games, which included back-to-back 23 points scoring outputs against IUPUI and at Southern Utah.
During the six-game stretch, Lewis is leading the team with a 14.7 scoring average to go along with 12 assists.
On the season, Lewis is fourth on the team with a 10.1 scoring average, while shooting .391 from the field and .438 from long range. He has reached double digits in a total of eight games.
Mushatt Ending Season On A Strong Note
Latreze Mushatt is closing out his freshman campaign strong has he has scored in double digits in eight of the last 10 games. The forward has posted new career highs three times during the stretch, which included an 18-point scoring output at South Dakota State on Feb. 14.
On the year, Mushatt has scored in double digits in 13 contests and he is averaging 9.1 points and 5.7 rebounds.

The Kangaroos have had eight different players lead the squad in scoring and four different players hit the 20-point mark on the year.
Brumagin Sixth All-Time In UMKC History In Career Scoring
Senior Dane Brumagin moved past David Robinson into sixth place in the UMKC record books in career scoring with his 34-point performance against SIU Edwardsville on Dec. 28. The forward, who is just the ninth player in school history to reach the 1,000-point milestone, currently has 1,358 career points, which is 46 points behind Quinton Day (1,404) for fifth place all-time.
Switch-A-Roo
Head Coach Matt Brown has used his 16 different starting line-ups this season. In total, 10 different Kangaroo players have started at least one game.
Hitting At 50 Percent
The Kangaroos finished with a 50 percent field goal percentage (25-50) on Jan. 15 against South Dakota State. It was just the third game this season that the squad has finished at 50 percent or better. UMKC is 3-0 when hitting at least 50 percent of its shot attempts with wins over Wichita State, Bradley and SDSU.
Trez Grabs Career-High In Rebounds
Freshman Latreze Mushatt grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds at Western Illinois on Jan. 2. It was the Michigan native's second career game with 10 or more rebounds.
Mushatt has been one of UMKC's top rebounders this season, as he is second on the team with 5.7 boards per game, which ranks 12th in The Summit League. The forward has grabbed at least eight rebounds in a total of eight contests on the year.
Hamilton Released From Scholarship At UMKC
Sophomore Reggie Hamilton asked for and received a release from his scholarship with the UMKC men's basketball program on Jan. 27. At the time of his departure, Hamilton was second on the team with a 12.6 scoring average to go along with 3.6 assists per game. He scored in 15-of-21 games for the Kangaroos this season, which included five games with at least 20 points.
Spence A Beast On The Boards
Sophomore Spencer Johnson has been a beast on the boards for the Kangaroos this season despite regularly facing taller players at the five position throughout the year. The 6-6 forward is tied for second in The Summit League with seven games with 10 or more rebounds. The Illinois native is leading the team with 6.6 rebounds per game, which is seventh in the league. He is also third in the league with 2.6 offensive rebounds per contest.
Improving His All Around Game
Sophomore Spencer Johnson scored in double digits for the 13th time this season when he finished with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting in the win over Centenary.
The Champaign Ill., native has been UMKC's most consistent post player this season, as he's averaging 10.5 points per game, while shooting .475 from the floor. Johnson has emerged into a play maker for the Kangaroos after scoring 54 points (1.8 ppg.) as a freshman in 2007-08.
Johnson Sets Career-High; Etches Name In UMKC Record Books
Sophomore Spencer Johnson registered a career-best five steals on Jan. 22 at Oral Roberts. The five swipes are tied for the third most in a single game in school history.
Fellow sophomore James Humphrey also etched his name in the UMKC record books with his five blocks against IPFW on Dec. 6. The five swats are also tied for the third most in a single game in school history.

Spence's December To Remember
Sophomore Spencer Johnson had an outstanding month of December for the Kangaroos, as he averaged a double-double with 14.9 points and 10.4 rebounds. The Illinois native posted five straight double-doubles to lead the nation from Dec. 4 to Dec. 18. He posted career-highs in points three times during the month and in rebounds on a pair of occasions.
Summit League Player of the Week Honorees
The Kangaroos have had a pair of student-athletes earn Summit League Player of the Week honors this season after having just one honoree in 2007-08.
Sophomore Spencer Johnson earned the team's first POW honor on Dec. 22 after posting back-to-back double-doubles at Northwestern and Eastern Washington on Dec. 15 and Dec. 18. The forward had 22 points and 12 boards against NU before finishing with a career-best 23 points and 11 boards at EWU.
Senior Dane Brumagin became the second straight Kangaroo to earn the Player of the Week accolade on Dec. 28 after averaging 30 points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists in a pair of contests. The forward scored 26 points against UTSA before following it up with a season-high 34 points against SIU Edwardsville.
UMKC Surpasses 2007-08 Road Win Total
The Kangaroos surpassed their 2007-08 road win total when they defeated Eastern Washington on Dec. 18 in Cheney. The squad is 3-11 on the road this season. Last year, UMKC went 2-13 in games away from Kansas City.
The Kangaroos picked up their first road victory at Wichita State on Nov. 19. The win was the program's first win in Wichita and the first road victory against a Missouri Valley Conference opponent. The win over WSU was also the largest crowd (10,282) that UMKC has won in front of since the squad topped Oral Roberts in from of 10,331 fans at the Mabee Center during the 2004-05 season.
