
Kangaroos Fall 1-0 To Evansville

Kansas City, Mo. -- The Kangaroos hosted Evansville on Thursday afternoon as a final tune-up before opening play in The Summit League. UMKC controlled much of the opening 90 minutes, but couldn't finish out the game as the Purple Aces tallied in the second overtime period to take a 1-0 win..
The game opened up with a lot of pace, with neither team able to control the early flow.
UMKC settled into its game first and took control of the match. In the 30th minute, the Kangaroos had a dangerous chance go just high, as Garret Guthrie found himself at the left corner of the six-yard box on the end of a cross by Brian Harris. He stuck his left foot out but drove the ball high.
Guthrie would nearly create a goal in the 44th, as he hustled to collect a deep flighted ball. A quick cutback on the endline froze his defender, allowing him to find a wide open Matt Kopsky on the back post. Unfortunately Kopsky nodded the ball just wide.
The teams went into the break on level terms, with both teams generating six shots.
A wicked effort from Brian Harris nearly opened the game up in the 49th minute. A seeking ball from the defensive third found the hustling Harris, and he unleashed a shot from about 35 yards out that dipped over the outstretched hands of Dufty but not quite below the crossbar.
In the 60th minute, the visitors tried to swing the momentum, but UMKC held solid.
Evansville had a solid counterattack in the 69th minute, but a brave piece of goalkeeping by Ken Cooper snuffed the attack, as he confidently dove at the foot of the Aces attacker to
Dufty would be equal to the task in the 72nd minute to keep the scoreline level at 0-0, diving quickly to his left and reaching behind him to snatch back a well-placed shot by John Bayron Sosa.
The visitors controlled most of the first stanza of overtime, but neither team could tally.
The Blue-and-Gold had a golden opportunity in the 106th minute, as a corner kick fell tantalizingly in the middle of the six-yard box, but the Kangaroos couldn't poke it home.
They would pay the price, as Evansville would end the game in the 107th. Cory Elenio played a ball to Dan Gibson 20 yards from goal. Gibson turned and took a touch into space, hitting a knuckling shot that UMKC's netminder couldn't get a clean read on.
With the loss, the Kangaroos fall to 4-3-1 on the season. Evansville moves to 5-4-0 with the win.
