Fort Wayne, Ind. -- The Kangaroos left it late in Sunday's Summit League opener at IPFW, but sophomore midfielder Bryan Perez would strike for his fourth goal of the season to give the Blue-and-Gold a 2-1 win over the Mastodons.
Both teams created decent chances in the first half, but the teams went into the half deadlocked at 0-0.
IPFW struck first in the second half, with Casey Bowman putting a shot past UMKC's Ken Cooper in the 51st minute. Chas Perry picked up the assist on the goal for the Mastodons.
Just 32 seconds after the restart, Perry almost doubled the lead for the hosts, but his effort sailed harmlessly high.
UMKC would equalize in the 57th minute, as the Kangaroos won a corner kick. John Bayron Sosa served the ball into the penalty area, where it found the head of Brian Harris. Harris nodded his strike past Josh Howell.
The Kangaroos continued to pressure the attack, but in the 73rd minute both teams were reduced to ten men as John David Hernandez for UMKC and Perry for IPFW were shown red cards.
The Blue-and-Gold would take advantage of a last-ditch counterattack to run out 2-1 winners. Matt Kopsky found Perez in the 89th minute on a nice through ball. Perez flicked the ball past Howell for the winner.
With the win, UMKC moves to 5-3-1 overall, 1-0 in league play. IPFW drops to 2-7-1 and 0-1 in league action.
The Kangaroos return home on Wednesday, hosting the Bradley Braves in a 3 p.m. contest at Bourke Field.
