
Guthrie's Brace Powers Kangaroos To 2-1 Win At Central Arkansas

Conway, Ark -- Closing out a three-game road swing, the UMKC men's soccer team capitalized on two goals from Garret Guthrie within the opening half hour to pick up a 2-1 win at Central Arkansas.
The Blue-and-Gold jumped out to an early lead, striking in the second minute. Brian Harris hit a nice cross to Guthrie, who pushed the ball past a sprawling Chris Murphy for his second goal of the season.
The Kangaroos would keep up the pressure, with Guthrie striking again in the 20th minute to double the margin for UMKC. Kyle Brewer was credited with the assist UMKC's second goal.
On the cusp of the half hour, Central Arkansas pulled one back, as Jimmy Nummy found Derik Schmille for a 28th-minute strike. The goal would be the last of the half, as the teams went into intermission with UMKC up 2-1.
The Bears threw themselves headlong into the attack in the second half but the Kangaroo defense was solid, holding UCA scoreless to preserve the 2-1 win.
Central Arkansas outshot UMKC 20-11 in the match, with 18 of the host's efforts coming in the second half. Freshman netminder Ken Cooper stopped five of the six efforts on frame he faced, with a team save also credited. Murphy was not credited with a save on the match.
With the win, UMKC moves to 4-2-1 on the season. The Kangaroos are back in action on Thursday afternoon, hosting the University of Evansville at Bourke Field in a 3 p.m. match.
