“We are unbelievably excited to have Pat join our UMKC family,” Frese said. “In his 20+ years coaching at the Division I level, he has a wealth of experience that our players and program can draw upon. Having won multiple championships while on staff at both Albany and Vermont, Pat knows what it takes to win at the highest level. Pat is genuine, hardworking and energetic and we are thrilled to have him as a part of our program.”
Filien joins the UMKC staff after serving the past three years as the associate head coach at Air Force where he helped former Falcons’ Alicia Leipprandt to Third Team All-Mountain West honors after the 2012-13 season and Jimi Blagowsky to Honorable Mention All-Mountain West honors in 2015.
“Beyond my excitement of joining the UMKC women's basketball family, I'd first like to thank Coach Frese for this opportunity,” Filien said. “I am looking forward to working with her, and sharing my experiences with Meredith, Danielle, and Jess. My goal is to help each of the ladies on the team grow as people, as well as becoming the best students and basketball players they can be, while helping to build this program to a championship level.”
Prior to his arrival in Colorado Springs, Filien was on a pair of America East men’s basketball staffs, spending six seasons at Albany and 2001-05 at Vermont.
With the Great Danes, Filien helped the squad to a pair of conference championships and a near upset of No. 1 seed UConn in the 2006 tournament, while his tenure with Vermont included three conference titles, three trips to the NCAA Tournament, including a first round upset of Big East champion Syracuse, and four consecutive 20 win seasons.
Before heading to the Division I ranks, Filien spent time at C.W. Post-Long Island, Lock Haven and Southern Vermont, where he began his coaching career.
During his collegiate years, Filien was a two-year starter at the College of Saint Rose, earning his bachelor’s degree in public communications in 1993, while on the court, he was named All-ECAC-South as a senior after leading the Golden Knights to a 25-6 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
Pat and his wife Tiffani have two children, Marcus, 14 and Lauren, 11.
