Brody Werner enters his second season as Kansas City Men's Basketball's Director of Basketball, Recruiting and Video Operations in 2025-26. This is Werner's fourth year with the Roos in total, spending the 2023-24 season as the Video and Scouting Coordinator, and the previous two years as a graduate assistant.
"I love the city of Kansas City, being close to my family and hometown, and working with Coach Menzies and all of the other great people at Kansas City," Werner said.
In his current position, Werner is responsible for all team travel, program logistics, and on-campus recruiting, while continuing his duties with video and scouting operations and compliance and academic liaison.
In 2024-25, the Roos were selected for a first place finish in the Summit League preseason polls, a first in program history. One of the most notable moments of the season was a six-game winning streak from Dec. 10 through Jan. 4 that included a road win at Wichita State, KC's first win over the Shockers since 2008-09. The Roos picked up a 73-56 win over Oral Roberts in the first round of the Summit League Championship, KC's first postseason win since 2017. Jamar Brown picked up multiple accolades throughout the season, including Second Team All-League, Academic All-League, CSC Academic All-District, Summit Peak Performer of the Week and an Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week honor.
The 2023-24 season was one of the program's best in recent history as a six-game win streak to end the regular season helped Kansas City earn a second place finish in the Summit League standings, tied for the best finish in program history. Along the way, KC picked Summit League sweeps over Oral Roberts, Omaha, Denver and South Dakota. KC's Dec. 29 victory over ORU was the first home win over the Golden Eagles since 2005, while the Feb. 15 win over SDSU marked the first win over the Jackrabbits since 2015.Â
Werner's assistance was key, as Head Coach Marvin Menzies brought home Coach of the Year honors, becoming the second coach in program history to do so. Jamar Brown was named First Team All-League and the League's Newcomer of the Year, while Jayson Petty earned Freshman of the Year honors, Khristion Courseault brought home the Sixth Man of the Year award and Babacar Diallo was given an All-Defensive team nod.Â
During his two years as a graduate assistant, Werner aided the Roos to 30 combined wins and five All-Summit team honors, including a First Team and Newcomer of the Year nod for Evan Gilyard III and Defensive Player of the Year honors for Marvin Nesbitt Jr.
Before his time in Kansas City, Werner spent four years as an undergraduate manager for at South Dakota. He spent 2017-18 under Craig Smith, followed by 2018-21 with Todd Lee.
During his time in Vermillion, USD finished top-three in the Summit League three-of-four seasons, making one championship game. Werner’s primary responsibilities were video operations, internal and travel operations, recruiting and organizing managers, organizing meals and miscellaneous office projects.
Most recently, Werner worked as a Basketball Skills Trainer at Going Vertical/Going Vertical Basketball Academy in Omaha, Neb., where he worked with players from the age of eight to veteran professionals, including former players from Nebraska, Bowling Green, Louisville and Summit League schools Omaha, Oral Roberts and South Dakota, among others. He also has coached high school football and basketball at Vermillion (SD) and Aurora (NE) HS and AAU for Central Nebraska Basketball Academy. Between USD and Going Vertical, Werner has worked with over 30 current and former collegiate and professional players.
Werner earned his master's in Higher Education Administration from UMKCÂ in 2023. He graduated from the University of South Dakota in 2021 with a double major in Kinesiology and Physical Education. He grew up in Aurora, Neb. and is the son of Scott and Lisa Werner.
