KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Men's Basketball Head Coach Mark Turgeon continues rounding out his coaching staff, bringing in Mike Rohn to serve as his second-in-command. Rohn will be the Roos' associate head coach, bringing power conference experience, local ties and a past rapport with Turgeon to the Kansas City sidelines.
"Mike was the first guy I thought of when I started talking with Dr. Martin about this job," Turgeon said. "He is an absolute grinder and is a terrific coach and teacher. He lives to be in the gym and he loves making guys better at their craft. His experience over the years and his contacts in the game will help us tremendously in recruiting. Bringing Mike to Kansas City is like hiring a second head coach, I will lean on him every day to make sure we are doing the right things to make the program great. We've had amazing success together in the past and with family in KC, it made sense to bring Mike and Steph closer to their daughters."
As associate head coach, Rohn will assist Turgeon closely with daily responsibilities within the program.
"I chose to come to Kansas City because of the great enthusiasm surrounding men's basketball on campus and in KC. It is a special place that is hungry for a great hometown team that they can get behind and believe in. Coach Turgeon and I have been part of some special teams and many amazing wins in the past and I am looking forward to many more here. I am really looking forward to being part of a very special coaching staff that Coach Turgeon has put together."
Rohn has been at Colorado for the past 16 seasons, coaching with Tad Boyle as the Buffs became a perennial postseason program. After spending the first seven years as an assistant coach, he was elevated to the position of associate head coach in 2017 and spent the last nine seasons in that role.
Throughout his time in Boulder, Colorado accumulated over 300 wins, including postseason appearances in 14-of-15 seasons. The Buffaloes most recently earned a spot in the College Basketball Crown, participating in both years of the newly-formed postseason tournament. He also aided CU to six NCAA Tournament berths, including three Round of 32 appearances.
Rohn's coaching pedigree also involves NBA talent development. During his time at Colorado, 12 former players went on to make NBA rosters with 10 selected in the NBA Draft. In 2024, three Colorado players were selected in the draft, a program best. He also aided in the development of Derrick White, who would go on to become an NBA Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist.
The 2023-24 Colorado team put together a 26-11 overall record, going for the most wins in a single season in program history. The Buffaloes advanced to the Pac-12 Championship game and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, defeating Boise State in the First Four before upsetting seventh-seeded Florida to advance to the Round of 32.
In 2020-21, the Buffaloes lost just one home game throughout the entire season and earned a five-seed in the NCAA Tournament, the school's highest since seeding expanded to include all teams in 1979. Colorado defeated 12th-seeded Georgetown in the Round of 64, advancing to the second round for the first time since 2012.
From 2012-14, CU qualified to the NCAA Tournament in three-straight seasons, the longest consecutive streak in program history. The 2012 team won the Pac-12 Tournament Championship in the team's first year in the league and were the first Colorado team to make the NCAA Tournament since 2003.
Prior to his time at Colorado, Rohn spent a decade coaching with Turgeon at both Wichita State and Texas A&M. He served as the director of basketball operations at A&M, advancing to three-straight NCAA Rounds of 32. He was on the sidelines as an assistant coach as Turgeon led the resurgence of the Shockers, earning three-straight NIT trips and a 2006 Sweet 16 bid.
Before making the leap to Division I, Rohn was the head coach at Dodge City Community College from 1996-2000. In 1997, his Conquistadors earned a Jayhawk West Conference Championship.
A Kansas native, he spent much of his early career in the Sunflower State. His coaching career began at his alma mater, McPherson College, in 1989-90. He went on to serve in assistant coaching positions at Colby Community College (1990-91), Fort Hays State (1991-93) and Dodge City CC (1993-96) before accepting the head coaching role at Dodge City.
Rohn began his collegiate playing career at Dodge City CC, where he spent two years before transferring to McPherson. During his time with the Bulldogs he was a two-time all-conference selection, earning Newcomer of the Year honors as a junior and Player of the Year honors as a senior. On Oct. 11, 2019, he was inducted into the McPherson College Athletics Hall of Fame.
A member of the NABC, Rohn earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from McPherson in 1990 and a master's in sports administration and coaching from Fort Hays State in 1993.Â
