Kansas City flipped the script on SDSU, snapping a 13-game losing streak against the Jacks
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Softball (12-20, 3-6 Summit) picked up its first wins of Summit League play this weekend after beginning the conference season against the league's top two teams, sweeping past South Dakota State (20-23, 5-4 Summit) in three games. The Roos combined to outscore the Jackrabbits 21-11 in the series, earning their first win against SDSU since 2021, winning a series against the Jackrabbits for the first time since 2017 and sweeping the Jacks in a three-game series for the first time in program history.
In the series opener, the bats led the way with a hot start, notching three runs in the first inning. Leilani Bustamante singled to knock in the first two runs for the Roos and Maya Anthony later scored on a wild pitch. After the Jackrabbits trimmed the lead to 3-2, the Roos responded with a big 5th inning, tacking on two insurance runs led by RBI singles from Ella Husak and Megan Johnston, as well as an RBI triple from Elleana Navarro. Kansas City tacked on more insurance in the sixth led by a three-run home run from Johnston to ensure a 10-4 victory.
Alyssa Droge started for the Roos, contributing three innings, zero earned runs, and just four hits. Delilah Roberts came in for relief and got the win as she completed four innings, allowing just two earned runs and one hit, while recording the final out in the Roos' victory.
In the second game, it was the Jackrabbits jumping out to an early 2-0 advantage before the Roos slowly chipped away at the lead. In the top of the third, Monica Franklin scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead in half. In the top of the fifth, the Roos took the lead, which they would never relinquish, behind a two-RBI double from Mia Corres then an RBI single from Navarro. Leading the way in the circle for the Roos was Roberts, completing six frames with just four earned runs. Droge later came in and closed the door on the Jackrabbits, recording a save while allowing just one hit in relief.
In the third game, the Roos got off to a quick start behind a sacrifice fly from Johnston in the top of the first. However, the Jacks responded with a two-run second inning to capture their first lead.
